Greeting Everyone,
I am a recent graduate of the Truck Driving Academy in the Greater Cleveland Area and I must admit I didn't want to leave. It can be a scary undertaking when changing careers at an older age (almost 50yrs) and just starting out in a very demanding job. But the instructors were extremly knowledgible and patient with each student. Learning to shift, do the manuvers and general basics about being a driver were all fresh and exciting to me. I highly recommend this school to anyone looking to learn to drive a truck.
Tri-C (Cuyahoga Community College) Truck Driving Academy is the BEST School...

Ladytrucker49,
Well, the lodging part, the college does not have those, but as far as the cost, it is $5295 plus, fees of $200 and $500 totaling $6000.00 ($5995.00) They start out with one week in class. You are taught all about trucking from a 28-year veteran driver, who still drives part-time. During this time, recruiters from trucking companies come and tell you about their company. Weeks 2-6 1/2, you are out in the "yard" with 3 year-old trucks. You are taught how to drive and shift, (you must have your CDL premits to be on the yard.) They will show you how to drive well enough to pass the CDL test, (you use a automatic transmission ---FYI..((By 2014, I am told, if you use a standard transmission for your test, that will be what you are restricited to drive. Same with the auto.)) we are luckly that 2 of the instructors are/were CDL Test examiners. ) They will not "throw" you out if you don't pass the first time, they will keep working with you until you get it. You can just do the truck (tractor/trailor) or you can add on the passenger/bus endorsement, and they will teach you the bus ( a 2011 International school bus) and test you on that too. During the 6 or 7 weeks of school, you will see many of the different companies (mostly the bigger companies like Maverick, Schneider, Swift, USXpress, and Werner,) and others like Falcon, TransAm, etc... Long winded, but I guess that you can tell that I loved the experience and should be going either to one of the following Werner, USXpress, or Schneider, one of the three. Keep ya post through the report threads. Take a look locally and find a good school. Good luck and be safe.
Warm Regards,

I have started at Tri-C Truck Driving Academy this past week. I wanted to share my experience with others interested in this school. The tuition cost of the school is $5995.00 and its a 160 hour course. I got funded through my local county by the Workforce Investment Act so the school isn't costing me a dime luckily if your income is low enough or you are unemployed I suggest this route. The school is in Euclid, OH not far from Cleveland. They don't provide any kind of housing or anything, but I myself am commuting. The school goes Monday through Thursday from 7 am until 6 pm and you get an hour lunch break at noon. They have some job placement assistance, but it's ultimately up to you to find a job. I have had 10 pre-hire offers in the first week of school. The first week of the school in spent in the classroom doing multiple tests and learning the basics to get your temporary CDL permit. My instructor John is great he was a driver for over 25 years and he still drives part-time on occasion. He tells you how it really is and he's not sugar coat things. I just got my temporary cdl permit with tanker and doubles endorsement. Starting monday we will be out on the pad learning pre-trip and coupling. Then after that we will be learning backing and maneuvers, then it is on to the road. You have to get 4 hours logged on the pad behind the wheel before you can get out on the road. There are 9 students in my class which is a bit large for my school, but with 4 trucks there is still plenty of time for everyone to get some practice. They also are one of those schools where if you don't pass the first time you test out the first time they will work with you. If you don't pass the second time though be prepared to pay for the fee for the test out of pocket because the tuition only covers two tests. But from what I have heard its very uncommon for the students to fail twice. If you have any questions about the school feel free to let me know and I will be happy to answer them if I can.
Drac1985 Thanks this. -
Good for you! Shop carefully for your first job. Going to a good private school there is no need to start your first job at poverty wages. You're working hard for that CDL so don't let some low paying starter company take advantage of you.

I am just updating my experience so far at Tri-C. I tested to get my Class A CDL this past Thursday. I was super nervous when it was my turn to test, but I prevailed and passed with a really good score on all three parts. I only list 3 points on the Pre-trip and got 2 points on the maneuvers and I got 18 points on the road test. Luckily for me I got the parallel park instead of the alley dock because my alley dock still needs some work. This school has a pretty good program, but be prepared to get a ton thrown at you quickly. I am not completely finished with the school because I have to get 12 more behind the wheel hours before I can get my certificate. They school has a total of 40 classroom hours, 80 observation hours and 40 hours behind the wheel. The 40 hours behind the wheel are made up of at least 20 hours on the pad and then 10 hours on the road plus an additional 10 hours of either pad or road time. You will go to take your CDL examination in Norwalk, OH at CDL of Northern Ohio.
