I last month got a new Western Star 4700 tri axle with the allison for one of my drivers and i am going to replace the other 3 dumps I have with these trucks ASAP. You could tell me, show me, but I would not be leave anyone till after this month. All of my trucks that are dump burn 80-105 gallons of die a day. It is a mix bag of motors 13l cat, n14 cummins. This new dd13 do the same work same haul is only burning 60-68 gallons a day. I am sold in this and I am shocked on the fuel savings. Once again we are sold on the allison as we have them in all of our trucks now.

Thanks for sharing that sounds great! Can we get another update in 6 & or 12 months plus what Allison that is?
-
4000s Allison, all the other truck I own are 4500s... I am looking at putting together a heavy haul tractor with the DD16 and the Allison 4700.
BoxCarKidd Thanks this. -
Thanks! Now mark your calendar for 6 and 12 months and let us know if you are still in love. I hope you are on your next update.

We have one dd series 60 and she can be a pig on fuel if your running heavy and on her hard all day, maybe they've improved.
Out of the 14 dumps we have the Volvo D12D is the most fuel efficient, but she lacks torque. -
We run 74,000-76,000 all day with good size hills. Fuel is great as of now. I wish I knew what the DD16 was like on fuel. Looks at a tractor for haul dump in the summer and oil in the winter.

I now have two 4700's with the Allison 4000 and they are great trucks. In the future I will be buying the Allison 4500RDS transmission again as 1st gear is lower and better for on site but for fuel economy the 4000s have been better. They 4700 trucks have been great, western star has a real winner when it comes to it with this 4700SF.
Only thing that we don't like is the A/C is weak, when it is 90+ out you will find your self running the fan on high all day. Better than nothing but not great at all. We had both of them in the shop for this and they said it is as good as it gets. Not very happy about it but we cant do anything about it. I think part of it is the lack of air being moved. The fans even on high don't move a ton of air but get the job done. When it comes to heat it will cook you out of the cab but once again it doesn't move much air but with is coming out is very hot.
Trucks are very well built, I have a buddy that just got a new Mack Granite and had it in the shop for some squeaking and vibration issues and he used one of the 4700s for the day as we were between jobs and he said if he had to do it all over he would get a 4700 also.
Any questions feel free to ask!
Here is a link to a pic of the trucks, both are the same.

Thanks for the update! I was more concerned about the Allison' than the Star's, no Star dealers here.
Don't know about the Volvo engines but I asked a man who was replacing big off road Cat dumps with Volvo's he said the fuel savings would pay for the truck in three years.
The a/c situation just does not sound proper. Hopefully some one has some pointers on on that. -
The Allison transmission is great. We have 5 now. Three 4500 and two 4000s transmissions. If your looking for a low first gear for site work, ect go with the 4500rds. The 4000s do the job great but on site they work harder because 1st gear is not as low as the 4500.
The extended warranty is also cheap. It was under $1000 for the 5yr/300,000 mile full coverage
