I have been looking for some used trucks and I see some good deals out of state. My question is, how can I transport the tractor home? Is there temp plates I can get to bobtail home or would I just have to let the truck sit there until I can get it registered and insured?

Buying from a dealer will get you a temp registration. However, is it valid in other states ? Also, check with the DMV in the state you buy it in, they can give (sell) you a temp registration. You will definitely need insurance.
cetanediesel Thanks this. -
You get what is called a hunters permit and you might have to get temp fuel permits. I used one from Illinois to Montana to lease onto a outfit once.

My answer is based on buying an Illinois truck, from a Washington state dealer, and needing to get it back to Ohio. The correct way to do it is to add the new truck to your IRP account, and just drive it home, no plate but a temp IRP cab card. What I actually did was take the plate from my existing truck and bolted it on and left. I later transferred that plate to my new truck after I got the title. (That is another story)

Third party DMV can sell you a 3 day temp. You cant haul "for hire" with it but you can get it home for less than $100. You just need insurance, do NOT get a commercial temp or you will have to pay IFTA in every state (temp reg it at less than 26K). If you have an IFTA account just pay the $10 for the stickers (you will need them eventually anyway) and temp reg as commercial.

Hey guys I appretiate the information. I'm looking into buying used truck from private owner or dealer. I'd rather buy a truck cash than have a 1200-1400 month payment. I don't have the best credit, around 600 score and heard about lone mountain but their monthly payments are too high. I've been searching around for a different place for financing but come up short. My budget for used is $15000. I'd like to finance a newer truck for about $30000 with around a 5000 down payment so I can have much more money In the bank for reserve fund.

There was a post just like this on here about a week ago, I can't find it now but the answer is what you are looking for as well, I will look around some more and see if I can find it.

Ya I tried a search and couldn't find much. But let me ask this.... I live in connecticut, so say I bought a truck in Texas, can I go to Texas DMV for the temp tags or CT DMV for them?
