I was wondering would it be adventitious to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential while being a commercial driver?
If it is, what are the benefits of having TWIC?

It's sometimes required if you pull tankers.
Also used for entry to chemical plants, rail yards, sea ports, military bases.
Are you driving now?x1Heavy Thanks this. -
I p&d to a military base weekly and they no longer accept TWIC or a passport as a means of identification....this started about 3 or 4 months ago. Now I just hang onto my day pass and give it to the guards and it's just as quick honestly.

I go to a couple of chemical plants and a couple of sea ports and both still require it. At least one of those sea ports has "escorts" that stays with you from the time you enter until the time you leave, if you have the TWIC but don't have that particular port's badge (pass).
My buddy runs into that issue all of the time when he has his wife with him. He has both the TWIC and the particular port badge, but his wife has neither. That means unless he drops her off somewhere else prior to arriving at the port, she will have to wait in the waiting room at the security gate until he comes back out. Sometimes it can be several hours from the time he gets to the port to the time he leaves it.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
I should be starting this week. I know it will be within the first two weeks of this month. -

TWIC just another BS government program. I tried to use mine as ID for an airplane in like 2010 and wasnt accepted lol Insanity still have to renew for my Captains License every 5 years. Absolutely useless. I have never used it once and its required my USCG. I spend 100 plus days on ocean yearly and usually inspected 2/3 times. Never asked for it.
bzinger Thanks this. -
It's not exactly BS, you need to have it to get physically close to ships tied at dock with your container.
Arkansas just implemented Enhanced Drivers license as a volunteer until Mandatory in 2020. What that means is that you can go onto federal military basing plus VA hosptials and other civilian federal buildings and lands and also... possibly access to Canada as well for a day trip or something without a passprot for which you need to get back into the United States. The borders being what they are, it's a strand of barbed wire easily cut passed through and repaired up there if need be. -
I own a Commercial Vessel here in Alaska. I tie up within stones throw of Cruise Ships and CG Cutters. Just another background check BS. Only place its really used is Ports and Fuel Farms here in Alaska and Alaska Marine Lines/Lynden Transport Docks. I am not saying its not valid just that the whole thing is crap. Useless beaurocrat BS started by someone "Smarter than the rest of us"
