Has anyone been through the process? I already have my CDL and I'm employed with a trucking company. But the thing that scares me is that the DMV California webpage says that I have to start process all over again? (Does that mean I have to go to school all over again?) Some insight would be helpful thanks.

No schooling just the written test and maybe a driving test, plus more of a tax base on your pay since you will be a California driver

From the CA DMV website:
"Even if you have a current, valid CDL from another state, if you move to California you will likely have to begin the commercial licensing process from the start to obtain your California CDL. Call (800) 777-0133 for details on how to proceed in your particular situation."
So yes, you will need to reapply for a CDL but that just involves the written and practical driving test...which you could do all in one day...no school required but study up! -
Thanks guys, got a little worried there.

NO there is no driving portion if you currently hold a CDL from another state..88228822 and TequilaSunrise Thank this. -
Hi trucking, I was told I have to surrender my Wis. CDL and start all over.It seems to vary from state to state. I plan to move to Colorado and and was told my Wis. CDL would be transferable. I know you are only allowed 1 CDL in your wallet.

I was considering moving to commufornia a year ago and they said just re do the written tests. That was coming from Ohio. Which was no big deal since when I transferred my cdl from Utah where I went to school to Ohio. I had to re do written tests.
Now when I moved to Illinois. I had to re do everything. Written. Pre trip. Backing. Right turn. Stop at line. And driving. That is hard to do when you're working 6am-6pm. -
Went through this a few years back when I moved from WA to CA. Redo all the written stuff but if your CDL is valid and not expired you don't need to redo the practical tests.
"semi" retired Thanks this.
