Removed top deck to r+r, found internal members rusted, cracked.
Do I have to replace cross beams or can I weld flat stock to these cracked pieces.![]()

The metal shaped like an "X" with a circle in the middle is the top side of the kingpin.
This is a 1999 trailer all steel on the top deck. Should I have kingpin plate replaced while I have this all open.
At a minimum I plan to weld 4" wide 1/2" thick plate to the sides of the cross members. Will that be adequate?
Thanks for any remarks.
Trailer repair. Now what???

Doesnt look like theres much left to weld to....
I'd cut em out....but thats just me....Toomanybikes, xsetra and IH Truck Guy Thank this. -
Yea you start welding on old rusty steel, I think your just bringing on more headache. I agree with prior poster. Replace all the old steel
Toomanybikes and xsetra Thank this. -
the first picture show the two main pieces with kingpin in center.
Replace the two main pieces and the 4 short pieces between.
Thanks. -
With the amount of corrosion there, I'd start by sandblasting the area so you can see the extent of the corrosion damage and then go from there. Corrosion can go either way. Sometimes the damage is much worse than you expect. Other times its not nearly as bad as it could be.

Is the X not the king pin? Replace it while you are there.
It is a bit difficult to say from a picture but I always try to make it a least equal to but prefer stronger than original.
If the lower plate is good, cut those four angles out and the pin. Put in a new pin. Use 1/4 " flat plate laid over what is there on the front and rear. That is from inner frame to inner frame. On top of what is there. Another piece at a 90 at the bottom of the picture would be good. Then put some heavy metal between them on top of the pin.
Not sure that is explained well but the surrounding material is equaling compromised so do extra to make up for it.xsetra Thanks this. -
I have some 3/8" thick 4"x1" C channel and some 3/8' thick 4" flat stock.
I'm going to clean existing and sister new metal to existing.
Laying C channel 4" flat side down then weld 4" flat on top of 1" to extend up the side of existing cross beam. Do this on both cross beams and put new C channel where all four little pieces are between by the kingpin.
Thanks for the advice -
Just be aware when welding that the tolerance on a kingpin is something like 1 degree max off from being perfectly vertical IIRC.

The repair I do today is to get me by for a couple weeks/ month and then take it to a trailer shop and have them replace all the innards, the kingpin and plate.
Trailer is a 99 and probably better having all new put in.
Thanks.
