I noticed one of my trailer axles locks up when empty and smokes tires. What would cause this?
Ive adjusted brakes on all 4 corners, still doing it. When loaded it doesn't lock up and smoke tires.

May have a bad abs sensor or too much gap. Check the wire going to it. May look good and still be bad. If abs light on left rear side of trailer is operable ( or abs trailer light on dash if newer trailer without an abs light on the side) turning key on and off twice then on will flash codes for diagnosis

I would check the length of the pushrods on that axle. Look at the angle of the pushrod relative to the slack adjuster angle. 90° is good. Check the angle of the axle that isn't locking up to compare. Was the trailer recently serviced?
If it isn't that then it may be an ABS issue.
I'm no mechanic, just some observations I have seen.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
My last trailer 01 Great Dane would lock up while empty. Same with a friends reefer seems it’s a common problem very dangerous in rain/ snow.Shop Had no answers already had new ecu . For some reason if I stabbed the brakes hard it would reset something and fix the issue. That trailers where it belongs Parked
