Had fun today, trotting down the road and I start to see blue smoke coming from the passenger side by the front trailer tire. So at this point im like crap, I lost a cam and tire is smoking.
So I take the exit pull off and go to look, when I bend down all I see is flames coming off the brake pad of the front passanger side axle. At this point im likeand run my fat arse for the side box to get a extinguisher. Grab it and spend the next 10 min putting the fire out every time it flames back up, ended up using up my main fire extinguisher and my extra on the passenger side.
Got the fire out finely, now its time to figure out wtf happened. After looking around I found the brake was way to tight in adjustment, I dont know if it self adjusted to tight or if it was over tightened when set. The trailer only has 3k miles on it as I picked it up from Utility new, everything looked fine this morning when I pre-tripped so my guess is it over adjusted.
Anyways fun day, here is the aftermath.

My trailer brakes smoked before because the trolley bar was half down.so after that I double checked to make sure the trolley was up and knobs were in.thank God you made it to safety op.
Fajo and mountaingote Thank this. -
Several years ago I was headed for Colorado with 8000 gallons of diesel. As I went around the curve going out of town, a car ahead of me slowed to turn so I got on the brakes a little. Something felt like it moved horizontally, so I decided to stop at the rest area about 5 miles away to check. About 3 miles later I look in the right mirror and I'm trailing smoke like a B17 that's been shot down. Fortunately there's a small store with a big enough dirt lot so I pulled in, grabbed my extinguisher and ran around the truck. Got a full-blown barbecue going inside the right rear wheel. Lady comes out and says 'you want me to call the fire boys?' Uh, yeah. They came and hosed everything down for an hour to cool it off. The tank was so hot you couldn't touch it. Anyway, the culprit was a wheel seal that had just been changed. Lasted less than 15 miles. Mechanic was an idiot.

Very similar to what just happened to me on Thursday. Except I used my water to cool the brake drum that put out the fire.
I have grease packed bearings on the trailer.
Hub, two tires and rims. Lug bolts and brake shoes and rebushed s-cam.
$2,052.00 for repair.
I had tire changed the day before. Checked lugs just 60 miles up the road. Well I looked at them. Didn't bar them. Should've.
Only 2 lugs still holding trailer tires on hub when I say the smoke. -
My company got lucky on this one, cost was 275$ for a road call and parts. Also two spent extinguishers are getting replaced in morning. Not a bad price to pay to not have the tlr burn to the ground. It pays to watch your mirrors.
Now sitting here at the caves waiting on me unload.pattyj Thanks this. -
Why does one shoe look worn down to the rivets and the other have near new lining?
Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
I think it's time for a second fire extinguisher... Yup.
