Would it be for hire?

You would have issues.
I consider myself to be an expert in this area.
Simple answer for your situation is when you are for hire, then cdl is required.
Just curious on this one......why would one go through the expense of buying a semi and a trailer and using it as a toyhauler for someone else? Usually they would use it as their own toy, in whcih case you would not be for hire and no cdl required. -
First off thank you for your response.
I would not be driving a semi I would be driving a pickup truck.
The plan is to be a hot-shot driver and sometimes pull other peoples trailers and sometimes use my own.
I own a lance cabover camper that I use for recreation only. I found out as I started to research DOT and CDL regs that I would have a problem with GVW with this set up if I tried to combine a business and a pleasure trip. So I have this bright idea??? If I sold the camper I could get a car hauler trailer that is also a camper of sorts and then I could pick up a load of say a car and take it to where I want to go. Then when I get there I would have an RV to hang out in.
The GCVW will be less than 26000 so I would not need a CDL + the trailer will not be carrying hazmat so the 10000 GVW trailer weight is not applicable.
I know that hot-shot drivers haul toy haulers for RV companies and that it is legal.
My concern is that I would be using my own trailer (Toy Hauler) to carry other peoples stuff.
What this tread is about is trying to kill two birds with one stone and having an enclosed trailer that can be used for business and pleasure.
PS I will also have a DOT legal sleeper added to the truck and do not plan on using the trailer for DOT legal rest when for hire. -

fyi for hire has absolutely nothing to do with having a cdl or not.

You're excepted from items such as shipping papers, labels and placards; however, they are still Class 9 HM.
Be safe. -
I have seen several people doing just as he states and they are running with no authority or anything at all.
You guys never seem to catch them. I was in Oklahoma and the dot did not even look at the obvious hauler. -
