Considering buying a truck next year.
What can I expect to pay a tow truck to tow tractor and trailer from side of the road to a shop 20 -30 miles away if truck breaks down?

Depending on where you are, and it REALLY makes a differance, it could cost $200 or $2000.
The average is about $475. Trust me when I tell you that $200 figure....is a very elusive creature.
Michigan (if I remember correct) charges for TWO separate tows. The truck is one, the trailer is the second. Even though they will tow them in one trip, still hooked together.
My friend was charged $450 for a service truck to come out 25 miles. And jump him off....in MS.
Breakdowns with service and/or tows...can eat your lunch. Along with the wife and kids lunch.
That's why it's imperative an O/O has at the least. Some basic mechanical skills.labagiamf Thanks this. -
It is good to hear a potential o/op wonder about these things. Towing will be very expensive. I have never seen a tow bill under $300. They usually have a $250 min, and always find some type of add ons. Getting work done on the road will be a bigger headache. Expect to wait 24 hours just to look at the truck. Once they diagnose the problem, it will be the next day before parts arrive. So any semi-major repair will usually put you down for 24-48 hours. Since you have no relationship with the shop you will get taken to the cleaners. They know you have no alternative.

So is there normally a flat rate , with the add ons, or do some charge by the mile? Also,I remember reading some time ago in one of those truck stop magazines that a few tow truck companies will only take cash,is this true?
Hopefully if I need a tow truck it will only be for a breakdown, and not to pull me out of a ditch.I don't even want to know what that estimate would look like.Last edited: Nov 5, 2010

All of the companies I have been leased to have that policy.labagiamf Thanks this. -

The company I drive for charges $185 and $5.50 per mile to tow. The mile rate increases to $6.50 to tow a combination, $50 more if I have to pull the driveshaft. $80 for a jump start, $185 for a simple winchout, $50 for a pull start.
The previous company I towed for charged $110 per hour P to P plus a fuel surcharge of 5.58 per mile. One hour minimum.
Both give discounts to dealers and other volume accounts.labagiamf Thanks this.
