I have an old trailer that 7'11" wide with the rub rail. The rub rail and stake pockets are all beat up and look like crap. I want to cut all that off the sides and extend it to a full 8'6" wide. My question is, are the D rings considered part of the trailer width or are they part of the safety equipment? So can I have some 14 steel bet into C channel to fit over the existing outer rail to bring it to 8'6" and then weld the D rings on the out side of that? Or do I have to use I beam for the full 8'6", then weld the D rings inside to the webb, so they are recessed? Thanks for your thoughts.

i don't believe load securemant counts in your width however if your empty and there not securing anything they may be considered over width, probably would never get hassled for it though.

Load securement does not count towards total width when in use. Ezrider is correct.

yep, but the securement equipment is equipment put on to secure the load, not something permently attached to the trailer. just like stake pockets , on a 102 the 102 is measured from the rubrail to rubrail. d rings permently attached are no different than stake pockets.

you should also find what the rating would be for a welded on channel for load securement rating.

    SHC Thanks this.

Your eyes are better than mine. :) I'll put my glasses on. I guess that means tarping systems. I'll look some more. It's in writing somewhere.

Tarping systems...like conestogas? I believe the limit is 9 ft ( which would be 3 inches per side)

The channel I mount on there will hold far more than 30,000lbs. per side. I have built many log racks for trucks and trailers I easily over build whats needed.

See, thats why I need you guys with years of ACTUAL on road experience to tell me what actually works when you are on the road. The book regs are not always what gets used by the cops on the road writing the tickets.
