Is there some type of breather on top of it?

Not that I know about? Is it the dreaded "Rear seal on the engine leaking" or torque converter pump seal? What is the fluid leaking?

There is a breather on top but I have doubts its the problem. Could be the tower gasket, top cover gasket, reverse light switch/plug or shift interlock valve on the side of the transmission, just under the top cover.

Could be coming from the engine too. Gonna need to do some digging to find the source.

    It smells like trans/gear fluid

Yep, every trans has a breather up top, just like an axle housing. Not much on top really. Shift tower, breather, reverse switch, top plate and sometimes a neutral safety switch. It's just splash lubricated up there so any leak should be minor. Make sure your trans isn't over full and forcing oil out the breather. Some trucks have transmission coolers above the trans and behind the engine. Make sure you don't have a cooler line leaking if you have one of those. Give it a good wash and keep an eye on it.

Most truck do, but some actually had a cooler up in that area. If you can follow your tranny cooler lines and they go to the front, then there is no cooler above the trans and it's just the regular stuff up there.

Went to local KW and they gave me estimate of $1000 to fix leak. $40 in parts, rest in labor/taxes. Top cover is leaking according to them.

Dude, buy a pair of cover-alls, put them on. Then wait for truck to cool down. Suck in that gut, and crawl underneath the truck.

Once under the truck, get into a crouching position, grab a flashlight, and look over the shifter linkage, rear of block and all other stuff under the cab.

Then decide if you really wanna give up that $1000 (to fix a $40 part)

That's what I did. No way Id pay them $1000 to do something like that...
Its actually pretty tight in there, I can't see top of transmission if Im underneath there as theres no head clearance. Shop said they would have to pull driveline to work on it.
