Do i need a 6 inch fuel filter wrench to change the filter on a detroit diesel 12.7 engine? Wonder if 5 inch wrench is enough for bottom and top cap? Thanks

Its not the spin on but the other one on the other side.

Make sure it is the small one and not the big one. Yes, there are 2 sizes. I have a new tech on the floor that did that a month ago when I told him to get his own wrench after I got tired of him borrowing mine every day.

There is a 5 inch one with e blue handle and a 8 inch one for the Davco 482 filter system. Oddball setup used on the 2012 Detroit DD15 and 16. The most common is the 5 inch which is what the OP is wanting.

I haven't messed with anything newer than 2006 not too surprising they redesigned the fuel filters since they've changed everything else

That's one thing I lived by when I was in a shop. If I had to borrow a tool more then once I always bought it when the took truck showed up! Nothing more annoying than a guy borrowing your tools all the time!

I don't mind loaning tools out for the wages don't match the job these days. A lot of new techs out there can't afford them, but there is a limit as well. If you borrow it 5 times in 1 week, then I suggest by 2 paychecks to either get it off eBay or the expensive tool truck. Filter wrenches is one of those things that all the techs should have so that I give no excuse for. However, the Detroit tools for doing overheads, that's a bit more understandable. Or that $10k Allison rebuild tool set... I don't even have that one and I have a lot of tools. Some things I don't do enough to make it worth it to buy the tools, but I know who to borrow them from and I am sure to return them cleaner than I borrowed them along with a beer purchase $20 bill left on the tool box.

Take care of the techs you work with and they will take care of you.
