Well, I found this out today.
One of the small coolant hoses that goes from block to expansion tank had a slow leak. I fixed it (while some coolant leaked) and decided to top up coolant. PROBLEM IS: expansion tank does not have MAX level, so I added an estimated amount 2 inches above min line.
On a 20 mile test drive today, fluid light & stop truck NOW comes on. I pull over, check everything out --- no leaks. Get back in truck and on the way back, same thing. pull over. nothing. hhhhmmm...
Once at my usual parking stop, I decide give it a thorough look an guess what.... THE EXPANSION TANK IS FULL, and overflow side is half full (light bulb goes off)
I grab a 32oz syringe and suck out about 1.5 quarts of coolant.
Take truck for 30 mile run. --- NO ISSUES
Conclusion: Too much coolant is as bad as low coolant AND overflow outlet on left side of expansion tank does not drain.
Truck: 1998 D12
Too much coolant is bad for you...

Drill a small hole in a coolant cap,
-
which cap? left or right?
-
Right, main one, they say it will release the pressure. I did this beacouse my coolant level sensor is leaking a bit. Work like a charm
nax Thanks this. -
Back in my time we run half a radiator if we had to, scoop some river water and toss some in on hot days...
With that said, I'll settle down. I just cannot stand trucks that want to all stop on a supposed error that is not... critical. So what if it's too much, let it spill. It will find it's own room soon enough.
My attitudes may not make sense to some. In my time with the older trucks without computers you nursed them along as best you could sometimes when they got hot. And boy did they ever.truckthatpassesyouby, alabamapoboy and Numb Thank this. -
I saw the title and thought you might be drinking it! lol

I have this same problem with my 05 Volvo d12 and I right now have the low coolant sensor unplugged so it does not shut down my truck. My coolant tank is topped off right to the cap so I will try tommorrow on what you said nax.

My sensor is new and also the expansion tank is half full also. LOL I have been trying to figure out why it shuts down when I plugged the sensor back in. Hopefully this will fix it maybe.
-
@Volvo8873 the expansion tank has two sections.
The right side is main side (has min level mark)
The left side is overflow side (has drain going down the driver side of fan)
Is your "overflow" half full?KB3MMX Thanks this. -
usually when the coolant tank is not topped off and no that doesnt mean all the way to the cap but about 1/4 from top of tank, then when you turn coolant wont move shutting down your truck been around volvo truck for 10 years and it still happens to me everything good first turn i take a little bit faster than normal truck shuts down go out put in about 1/2 gallon all good no problems, do not drill caps just loosen about 1/2 thread it will have the same result although over psi in you cooling system that a whole different issue coolant cap drilled only usually fix till something goes really wrong.
