i am faced with the decision that most o/o's face at one time or another. i have an 05 international 9200i with a cat c13 430hp that has pressure in the crankcase. i would buy another truck, but with the prices of a 400k-500k truck, i am seriously considering an inframe. my truck has 723k on it and it is no creampuff, but i owe very little on it (it is my first rig), and i like the truck (most of the time). does anyone know the "going rate" to overhaul this. any advice ?
to rebuild or not to rebuild

Man that engine ain't got enough miles on it for a complete rebuild!!
buddyvuk Thanks this. -
it very suddenly started drinking oil 3 weeks ago. before that, i would add 2 gallons during a15k change interval. it doesn't leak or smoke, but the blow-by tube is busy. could be a turbo, but i doubt that i am that lucky. am i looking at $20k-$30k ?

I was going to say, No don't do the in frame, it is way to early if it has been maintained, Save the money and do a lower rebuild with mains and rod bearings. Maybe run the haed to the shop, but not a Inframe this early. Just my 2 cents worth. Good Luck.

There is absolutely no way to give you a price on the work you need done. The only way to have a good estimate is go to a shop, and determine the problem. The term overhaul has different levels of work. 20 grand ? possible, but doubtful unless the engine has been abused, or there is very major damage. Your trade in value will be very low if the engine is needing a major. Get it to a reliable mechanic and get the facts, then decide on your action.

I concur with jbatmick, you need to know what is actually wrong and what may be involved to fix it before you make that decision. If you got a cylinder going bad, an in-frame rebuild may not be out of the question. And, if you're in a place where you have the time and funds for it, even if it is a bit early, you'd have it out of the way for quite some time to come. But, if your problem is a turbo needing replacement, it wouldn't make much sense to do an in-frame at this time. My 2 cents anyway.

That C-13 Acert is known for having overheating problems. Thats not alot of miles, im hoping i get over a million with my Detroit. The other problem with cat is expensive parts and labor. I would do what starsonwindow said.

That 05 is an egr engine ands some of them are about done at 750000 miles. As for an inframe it depends on where you have it done.A local guy did my boys N14 complete out of frame overhaul with cummins parts for 15000. no warranty but we trust him. You can also use the off brand kits and save some money with them.Do NOT get this done at a truck dealer.Check with a Cat shop but they will be expensive.A very good but expensive shop shop is Antrim Diesel in Greencastle, Pa.717 597 7963 ask for Richard they will run it on a dyno before and after and will give you a ton of horsepower if you want it.they have many 1000 horsepower customers out running on the road.I do not know if a C13 can go that high but I would guess they could get 500 or better out of one. They do not advertise like pittsburg power or the guys out in ceder city but they do excellent work

Im not 100% sure , but cat doesnt have an egr. I have an 06 int C13 and my engine is doing the same. Did a research and was told those engine uses oil between oil changes. The pistons are worn, i was told its cheaper to add oil, than a inframe. This topic has been discuss several times in the garage section.
