Just recently graduated from a CDL school, ex military, farm kid all that good stuff TMC tends to like, so they sent me a prehire. I am interested in them, but I have heard some rumors and stories from TMC drivers and others.

    1. A TMC driver told me his class started with 65 and ended with 15. Are they always looking to narrow it down like this or was this just a rare case?

    2. Body Mass index. A guy I was in school with told me that he was rejected for being too fat. The guy was a blimp, so I didn't pay it much attention; however I have heard from other people that they will wait until there are 1 to 2 days left and then axe you for this reason. Is this true or simply rumors created by upset individuals? I am 6'0 240, sure I have a little gut but most is muscle from football, farm work ect. I still work out on a daily basis.

Just a couple of questions I would like to have answered before I commit to working for them. Maverick is also ringing my phone as well. I don't want to go up to their orientation only to be rejected and sent home without a job. The body mass question was my biggest concern.

I would think that if TMC was checking BMI it would have been mentioned here. It may have been a disgruntled hopeful employee.

I would call them and ask. I can understand you not wanting to waste your time or theres.

    Best of luck to ya.

They do have requrements that are listed on their website.
You need to be able to climb a ladder, lift a tarp (they say about 120lbs) and you need to be able to jump ontop of a load that is at about shoulder height.

I'm sure blimp guy couldn't do that, so they sent him away.
I'm kinda like you. I'm a bigger guy, but I've been lifting weights for about 8 years and can take care of most physical requirements. Just dont ask me to be in a foot race. ;-)

They can't be to horribly picky. A guy my husband use to work with recently signed on with TMC. He's short (under 6', probably about 5'10ish) and round...that's putting it nicely lol. I was actually shocked when my husband told me they hired him, didn't think he'd meet the standards that I read TMC had.

I was worried about the BMI also, when I went to another company. Rumors flew there too.
As it turned out, they are getting their drivers in line to meet 'suspected' BMI regulations for CSA 2010. (There are none yet adapted by 2010)
I was 5-11, 221#. The chart showed me with a BMI of 31, which is where 'obese' starts. The suspected limits will be a BMI of 30. The doctor did point this out and tell me I had 60 days to lose 3# so no one would hassle me.
Up to that point, people were put thru other tests to decide if they could make the grade. Similar to your class, mine had 65 to start, 31 went out with trainers.
The day before the end of orientation, larger candidates were put thru the 'fat man' test. (the candidates term, not the company).
I saw six fail and get sent home. One made it, and I'm sure his BMI is over 36.
The test consisted of climbing into the tactor on the driver's side, then getting out, going around to the passenger side, climbing in, then climbing into the top bunk, then out and out the tractor to the back of the trailer, into the trailer, back down, then under the tandems to 'check' the brakes, back out and then crawl under the tractor in front of the front drive axle on your back to 'check' the brakes.
None of the failed students could do this.
By the way, we all had to do the same thing.
Some of the failed guys couldn't get under the tractor because their belly was too large.
I suspect we'll see a lot more of this as 2010 becomes more implemented.

hey im at tmc training right now im on my 10th day doesnt matter how big or small you are as long as you can climb up that ladder and lift that tarp and pull youself up on a trailor using just your arms.Theres some big ole boys here and some real small ones. The only people we have lost are drug test failures, diet pill failures, and people who could not drive at all.And by the way there was 40 in are class and 35 are still here with 2 days of training left..

I was just reading this thread it struck me how stupid this BMI thing is. I'm not overweight and dont have to worry about it but it just seems wrong to cut somebody out of their chosen profession completely because they have a weight problem. They just run all over truck drivers if they tried this crap on Joe-motorist there'd be such outrage it would never fly. How's it any different than discriminating on race? How can they just make a rule up based on zero evidence that this group of people is a saftey hazard and put people out of jobs like that.

Sometimes you have to wonder what frikken country do we live in anymore. Where does all this stupidity come from and whens it gonna end? I've been riding around the past few months and noticed how all the chicken coops are just rolling trucks right thru never seeing any being inspected. Looks like business as usual. It sort of gives me the uneasy feeling that they're sitting in there sharpening their knives and chomping at the bit to go on a revenue frenzy this summer.

I havent been trucking that many years. I remember being a newb and hearing old timers talk about all the change they'd seen over the years and aside from better equipment most of it was for the worse. I'd rolll my eyes and yet here I am one of those drivers cause I've seen it myself. I remember the 8 hour rest breaks and then they changed that and mixed it up several times again for good measure. I'm not a stupid person but I have never been able to figure out the split sleeper for a solo and how that impacts your 14. So even though I may nap for an hour or two on occasion when i feel like i still always log 10 hours sleeeper. call that cheating or whatever i get rest when i feel i need it and i dont drive bleary eyed. When the blackboxes get here everything will be just fine right? Some drivers, not me, will let the blackbox "force" them to run over somebody cause they will drive tired, is that saftey?

Now this csa2010 beaureaucratic nonsense. I'll just do as I always have and get by I guess. theyll never stop picking on drivers and making us jump thru hoops. You have to be a #### fool anymore to want to drive trucks but i cant help myself i do like driving big trucks. ok i'm off the soapbox now sorry for jackin the thread..

I don't know where some people get them, since the FDA has pretty much banned them, but people find a way...

Anyway some of those old diet pills have ephedrine in them.. which kind of has the same effects as meth.. you can stay up for days and loose weight. Truckers used to be known to eat them like candy, even my step father admits to doing it back in the day.

When did you get out of the Navy? They were coming down hard on that as well when I was in. People popping them before PRTs.

    Anyway back to TMC

The guy who was telling me this, was a good guy overall.. but he was one of those people who always had a story better than yours to tell. He was also roughly the size of my jeep. I am really surprised he could get into the drivers seat at school and even then he probably had a rash from the wheel. I honestly don't think he really realized how big he really was.

Like I said I am a big guy, but I have a lot of muscle from the military and from some college ball.. I can run to ... 4.89 in the 40 :biggrin_25519:. Maverick turned me down today for some reason so I suppose I will be heading to Des Moines in the next couple of weeks.

I noticed they required a hazmat, I am broke now but is that something I will need before I get there or can I get it when I come back from orientation.. or perhaps I should ask my recruiter about?
