    ok, THE other post on pre-tripping contained a video which linked me to another (thanks again for posting it)

    Anyways, he talks about tire fires and says you should keep driving?


    i always thought and heard to stop and get the fire extinguisher out?


    Your thoughts?

    Yes you should keep driving and get on the phone to the local fire dept,for a tire to catch on fire it takes a lot of heat you will never put it out with your own extinguisher.
    I had a driver on my truck and had a brake problem on the last trailer axle when he stopped to have a look it burst into flames,instead of getting back in and driving he rang the fire dept by the time they had arrived it had caught the last 2 axles on fire and was moving up the trailer burning the aluminmin........total right off.
    If he was to get moving again the flames would of stopped and he could of meet up with the fire truck on the way,it takes a lot of water to put out tire fires.
    About 16 years ago I had a bearing collapse on the trailer and the brake drum was leaning on the brake shoes when i slowed for a intersection it burst into flames when I got moving again it stopped I drove about 2 miles to a concrete plant and poured heaps of water on it,took a while to get all the heat out of it.
    We are lucky that its a small country over here and the towns are close together I wouldn't like to have it happen over there in the middle of nowhere,I would still keep moving though it will give you more time to get a plan together IMO.

    Extinguisher is useless on a tire fire, only thing that puts it out is lots of water, or something cold like a huge CO2 extinguisher. The video is right on all counts.

    Now that i think of it, it does make sense----remember stop, drop and roll?


    i always thought that the rolling would sort of fan the flames and give it more air(oxygen) and fires LOVE oxygen. But then, the rolling would smother the flames.

    Fire loves oxygen is correct. Fire really loves heated oxygen.

    When the tire is rolling, it keeps the heat from building in small area. Hence, when stopped, the spread of the fire.

    The driving for a long period with the tire on fire will not be an option.
