Hi guys. I have been driving for a couple of years, but they have started sending me on long cross country runs only this summer, so this is the first time I need to involve myself with tire chains.
I am currently in SD, heading west to Seattle. My company, Werner, does provide tire chain banks, but since I am planning to buy my own truck soon anyway, I figure to save the hassle and just buy my own chains today or tomorrow. Loves just quoted me $115 or so per set, which seems steep. I am not looking for premium top quality, since I am not planning to use them very much, would rather wait out the storm. Just need something that would satisfy the requirements and avoid getting a ticket for not having the chains on the truck.
So... what's considered a good deal on basic quality chains? And where can I find a good deal on 90 between Rapid City SD and, well, wherever I need to start having them...? I would want something that would satisfy requirements for every state, I know Colorado has something about steel chains, but not sure about the details..
Thanks.
PS if anyone wants to sell me their old chains for a good deal, I'd be interested in that too

They're pretty cheap in late April. This time of year I couldn't tell you.

Before you go buy chains, you might consider that the truck you buy may not come with the same size tires.

Low profile and hi profile 22's and 24's. That's 4 different sizes.
PermanentTourist Thanks this. -
A truck stop is probably the last place you want to look for anything... try a truck dealer along the way.

Btw, best deal I found so far is pilot Town Pump in Billings for $100 a set, in case anybody wants to know. -

Those are 3 rail chains and are of better quality that you will find at the truck stop. Don't skimp on quality and you will have them for years or you can replace fenders and such.
Keep in mind that there are a few states that require you to carry 8 singles. Yep take a look at WA and OR and how they want you to chain up. Even if you never need them you must have them available.
Personally, I carry one set of three rail and two sets of singles. My old company you carried two sets of three rails and one set of singles.
By the way, you do NOT drive at high speeds with chains on.Wymon and PermanentTourist Thank this.
