TA in Tonopah,AZ on the I-10 is trying to tell me that that a Michelin 275/80R 22.5 and Ironman 295/75R 22.5 are compatible and it’s ok to run with one of each on your steers! They’re whack right?! I run Michelins on my steers but all they had was a the wrong size Ironman when I picked up a screw. Help me out here! Am I crazy to go off on this idiot?

Math says
275/80r22.5 39.79" tall
295/75r22.5 39.89" tall
With that said, I still wouldn't want to run it.
I'd assume little harm will come of it.? Depending how bad I wanted to keep moving, I might run it to the house, or down the road to a shop with a match for the Michelin..Coffey and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
I have no idea but other than a slight size difference is it ok to run two different brands on the steers?
Would they perform the same as in would or could one brand grab differently than the other which in turn could cause a bigger issue in an emergency or hard stop??Coffey and singlescrewshaker Thank this. -
It'll get yoy on the road till you can replace it, or you could run it out. People do it all the time.
I'd put another Michelin on thoughCoffey and singlescrewshaker Thank this. -
Why not plug /patch the tire with the screw or put a used steer on the truck and get to a tire shop that has what you want.
I doubt you will match your existing good steer with identical wear.
When I have a tire problem on the road, I use the cheapest option to get home.
I always change my steers in pairs, when I can get home to my local supplier.
Your situation above. If buying a new tire is the only option. I would run until I got home and change both. Everyone can use a good spare.
In my early years I would mix and match sizes and brands to keep my truck rolling. Now I have the option to do what I do.
Nothing wrong with what the TA tech said.
Good luckBigtruckdrivah Thanks this. -
Different brands. But if you have to move it gets the job done. -
Can't pulg a steer. Can't patch a steer.
Worst ####ing thing in the world is losing a $700 tire to a nail, right after getting reamed by a dot cop named sue.Chieftains Thanks this. -
Since they are steers, it's a bit different than the drives or tandem tires. Many truck stop shops simply won't plug a steer and put it back on. Right or wrong, they usually won't do it on a steer.
I'd personally be very leery about running 2 different, unmatched, tires on the steers. If that's the only option, I'd only do it until I could get a matched set. Matched set being 2 tires of the same brand, size and model and close to the same wear. -
During hard times way back, I’ve had a front steer plug and patch. I got the life out of that particular tire without any issues. Today, if it would happened again, I would buy 2 brand new steers. But in an emergency on the road, I would probably have it patch just to get home.
Btw, you couldn’t give me an Ironman tire to run. -
Diesel Dave Thanks this.
