Just finished installing my 1st wet kit and hit a snag. On all my connections I used permatex liquid thread sealant. Only had 2 very small leaks on the pressure side at the threaded fittings.

Should I use a different type of thread sealer for the pressure side?

I use permatex on all pipe thread fittings. JIC fittings dry. No problems on pressure or return side.

You should not need thread sealant on hydraulic fittings, they are a tapered seal; if you are using pipe fittings on the pressure side you are asking for trouble as they are not rated for the pressure.

Pipe fittings are rated for pressure. Quite a few pumps have female pipe fittings for the pressure lines. You probably didn't get an even coat of sealant around the fitting. I like using the heavier natural gas rated tape around pipe fittings. Make sure it is natural gas rated tape as the cheap stuff most places sell is junk.

To get to 3000 psi with a 1 inch pipe fitting requires a stainless fitting with a .095 wall thickness, brass fittings will barely get you to 2000 psi, carbon steel and galvanized will contaminate the fluid.

I always build for 3000 psi because most pumps that find their way onto dump trucks are rated for about that.

But I have seen guys plumb them with galvanized water pipe, I just shake my head.

Personally, I prefer thread tape to pipe dope on NPT threads. Just don't put the tape on the first thread or 2 as there is a chance the tape could work its way into the system. Also want to wrap the tape the opposite way of how you'd thread the fitting in so that tightening the fitting doesn't peel the tape out.

Thanks guys for the info. I think I'm going to try some good tape and see if she leaks. I did use the stainless fittings for my pressure side, they are NPT not JIC type.

    RET423 Thanks this.
