I guess I can call it a stroke of luck. Back in the late 90s, I bought a Cobra 29 NWSTWX on eBay...I fell victim to the flashy..."this radio has been tuned and peaked by a fantastic CB shop in Louisiana" description. I always questioned its "boosted" capabilities. I've never had a problem with getting out, and some would claim I step on others toes. The CB Shop behind the Flying J in Lake Station never did give me an exact watt output number, but they said it indeed was boosted and a good performer. Well, that dang radio has outlasted and outperformed any other radio I've owned, backup or otherwise. However, my NW is now dead, which is ok and I'm starting to experience more mechanical issues, knobs, meter, etc etc.
I never looked into them before because I've been content, but those dang Galaxy 959's have definitely caught my eye.
So my question, to you guys who've experienced both boosted Cobra's or stock/out of the box Galaxy's, which one from my point going forward, would be a wise investment? I run a Wilson 2000 with "external" marine-grade coax, completely separate from the stock coax that comes with the truck. If I got a couple hundred $$$ lying around, should I roll the dice and buy a Galaxy 959 and see how it goes?
Or is it just a waste, and get the minor mechanical items, meter sticking, knob static issues, fixed by my reputable shop in DeForest WI?
Thinking about moving from Cobra 29....to Galaxy 959? Thoughts?

You want frequency display, get a Uniden, I have a 980, same footprint as the 29, with SSB, 880 is AM only.
Lots easier to install a front mic plug radio, from experience, and I have a 29, and a 959 sitting at home.
959 needs work. -
Gotcha, thanks for your insight gentlemen! That all makes sense, I've never had a radio with sideband and I've survived this long. I've only run into a few instances where I've heard guys talking/bleeding over from other channels, and a quick scan through the 40 yields nothing, even though I can still hear them bleeding over, so I assumed they were on sideband, but other than that...I've been fine.

I have a Galaxy 959 and it is one of the sweetest radios I own. Besides having sideband, the frequency counter is a nice feature too. The RF power knob is great if you need to drop down your watts to 1 if you plan on using an amp like Italy KL203P, keeps you from sounding like over modulated.
Out of the box, it's good, nice output, nice swing. I think it's a pretty loaded CB with talkback, clarifier, R Beep, Mic gain, RF gain. Has SWR alert, if you have a bad antenna match, keep your finals safe.... only peeve is side mounted mic.
Quality, my opinion, same as Connex.
Cobra is good too. The Galaxy 959"B" is even sweeter, backlit face plate,
Just my opinion, anyways....
Need more CB'rs these days, a dying breed we are.Groundhog0560 and wolverine11 Thank this.
