Looking at adding a 2nd truck to my business gonna haul livestock locally in a 300 mile radius, got a relative I was gonna let drive my freightshaker and I would drive this one. heres what I've found wanted to see what you guys thought of this deal, any imput good bad or otherwise would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

1990 W900, guy selling is the 2nd owner and I've verified, yes seen with my own eyes actual receipts and paperwork on all work done. Paint is decent, however I've got a buddy that would paint it for less than 2k for me. Interior is pretty good, ac works good, all gauges work except 3.
This is the first truck in a while I've found that the owner has actually had the paperwork for work done. he said he paid 15k for it 3 years ago but with the work done in last 3 he's got over 35k in it. plus hes checking to see if I could buy an add on warranty when it expires.

whats the good/bad on this mechanical cat? mpg? can power be turned up and can anything be done to get better mpg out of it...he said he pulled 80k and got about 5. Only thing that has me debating is the it being a fuel hog, however I'm kinda leaning more towards wanting it because its a w900 and a ton of work done to it.

    Heres specs

    425 CAT - Mechanical
    15 Speed 1 Million 40k miles
5 Months warranty left on motor (Aug 30, 2011)

Replaced with the last 3 years
    - Front end
    - Fan
    - Radiator
    - Clutch
    - Starter
    - Alternator
    - 5th Wheel
    - All hoses and belts
    - Steering tires in great condition
    - Drivers caps in fair condition

    asking 11,000.

    Thoughts and imput?

    Thanks fellas

hauling a cow wagon you are looking at well over $1/mi just for fuel for that truck. mechanical cat is about as good as it gets other then that. it's not like a computer motor though. turning it up will only decrease your fuel mileage.

All of our mechanical cats in 379 petes 13 or 18 speeds, 3.33's and pulling 48 foot spread axle reefers got 4 to 4.5mpg on average running west coast.

To me keeping good records is always a great idea, the owner can periodically check to see if it's about time to replace certain things and how well certain parts and brands are holding up, and when you want to sell it's a great way to show the prospective buyer that its been taken care of. You will get many opinions as to which truck to buy, but you will stay busy on the computer and burn a lot of gas looking at trucks that won't have what this truck has to offer, along with the records which you won't find to often. I love my B model for several reasons, they're tough as nails, easy to work on, and can deliver a bunch of power with fairly cheap and simple mods. You didn't say where the owner lives so I don't know the terrain, but my truck will get as bad as 4 1/2 mpg with 80000 lbs in the mountains, and as good as 6 1/2 mpg in the flats or with lighter loads, so I tell people that I get about 5 1/2 mpg average, but with a bull wagon you will probably going to lose 1/2 mpg no matter what engine you run. I think from what you've told us, the truck would be a good buy, if you need another truck. The retail parts price would make it part out for about that price, ie. 3406 B running in good shape about $6500, trans about $1500, air ride cut-off about $2500, then you still have cab and misc. parts including wheels, tires, radiator, exhaust, bumper, etc. I hope this helps and good luck with whatever you decide.
