I'm thinking about getting a Galaxy CB radio (not a 10 meter) and am leaning toward the DX-979.

I want a CB with a variable output knob so I can use it with or without a kicker.

Is there a better option than the DX-979?

If so, what and why is it better?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I'd rather have a used "export radio" with twin finals like the General Lee, Connex 3300HP or equivalent. That is just my preference. As far as what you are looking for, I think that is a good choice.

Yeah I have the 979. It's not a real galaxy. I thought it was. I want a Connex next. I'm not happy with the galaxy. Just not like the 99 that I was expecting it to be like. Plus the side band I never use.

What do you mean "not a real Galaxy"?

Is it not made by Galaxy or it doesn't perform as you expected a "real Galaxy" to perform?

Yeah it doesn't perform as expected. From the galaxy brand. I had visions if the old 99 when I bought this it's not the same. My buddy has an old 66 that I wish I could get from him.

The Galaxy radios with 3 numbers like the 979, are legal CB radios. The ones with 2 numbers like the 99, 98, 94 are Export radios. Which are higher power radios.

Right. The three digit Galaxy's are "Real" Galaxy radios...There just basic Legal CB Radios. As for the 979, IMO it's the best one of the bunch. Same size as a Cobra 29, but with a few extra features the Cobra doesn't have, like variable power and SSB...And if your planning on later adding a kicker, these are your best bet, since you have more options on which kicker you want to go with.

Seems like mine doesn't receive good enough. I got an old cobra I should get fixed and use that. I just don't know who to go to anymore. I used to go to the guy in va at ruther glen.

Not uncommon with radios right out of the box...Manufacturers don't take the time to get them tuned just perfect, they just get them to talk, and box'em up and ship them out...Always a good idea to let the shop selling the radio go ahead and do a quick P&T before shipping...Of course you still have to hope the person doing the tuning, know's what he's doing...

Little late, but I just bought a DX-979 from DTB Radio and he tuned it up... I love it.

Second everything JJD said above. Get it P&T'd...but only by a competent tech, not the guy who does the clip-'n-snip special.
