the truth about thermo king reefers with the expensive screw compressor!!!all mechanics i talk to about changing the front seal on the screw compressor are scared of doing it and all say the compressor is no good throw it away and buy a new compressor or a different reefer unit...they say it cant be rebuilt and its not worth the money to change the front seal...after months of searching for a mechanic to change the front seal and bearing in it,i decided to take the compressor apart myself to see what everybody is scared about...it turned out that the screw compressor is mostly hard parts and self explanitory on taking it apart and putting back together...whats inside is bearing and heavy duty thick steel gears and o-rings and screens...that is all...its easier to rebuild then a cars carburator...mechanics are such bs and this rumor of burned out screw compressors is bs lies and rumors...if a bearing wears out change it.if a tooth on the gear breaks off which i dout change it...as long as theres no damage to the shaft housing to keep the shaft straight and stabilize the compressor is ok...i was a car mechanic for 20 years and took this compressor apart and seen with my own eyes that the reefer mechanics was so full of #### it wasnt funny...everything in there is heavy duty gears, and bearings and o-rings...there nothing fragile or technical about the screw compressor...im so pissed off at these reefer mechanics,im cutting them out of my bizznez life.and im looking for a flatbed to buy...them reefer mechanics are crooks,or un-expierenced in mechanics general knolledge...

If you are working on compressors you have some old equipment. Why not buy stuff you don't have to work on? It's either payments or parts. Payments are easier. :)

Mechanics are strictly R & R. They ain't in the business of rebuilding.

It is a joke. They want almost as much to replace a shaft seal as to replace the whole compressor with rebuilt. I was told last spring I had a leak at the shaft seal. I told them to add refrigerant and rolled on. It has run fine for 10 months now hauling everything including frozen.

As far as buying new? I'd rather spend a couple thousand fixing problems I know I have rather than $35-55,000 on a new trailer or $25k for a new unit. Just my opinion.

Chucky, meant to add this. If you need reefer work, at least simple mechanical stuff, there is a shop right out side the Produce Row market here in H town on the north side of the street that does pretty good work cheap.

Reefer mechanics are just like the rest. A few good ones and a LOT of wannabes.

On the rebuild vs. replace mentality, it's all about warranty risk. Install a OEM part and the factory eats the comeback. Do it on the bench and they own your reefer from now on. Or,as you did, doityerdamself LOL.

FWIW: I've got Carriers, so no idea who the good TK places are. I found a local guy that does good work on my side of ATL. Carrier Transicold South in St. Rose, LA and Forest Park, GA are good, as is MHC Carrier in Kansas City, KS

Do I have to vacuum out the freon before i remove the compressor? I have a shaft seal leak (clear oil under bellhousing). Reefer cools grear, site glass on compressor showing over half full on oil, buuuuuut I know eventually i am going to need to do it. I see two big hoses on top with removable brass caps that hide/covver some shutoff valves. Is thus to contain freon so one does not have to capture the freon?

You cannot pump down a TK truck unit scroll compressor. You have to remove all the refrigerant. There is no discharge service valve like a recip compressor.
