With the belts off check if any of the pulleys are wobbly or any bracket or device is loose causing one pulley to be misaligned. Also check that they all turn freely. I'm suspecting you have something with a worn bearing.

Next run the unit with the belt on for 5-10 minutes turning the temp way down so it runs on fast idle. Shut the unit down. Feel each pulley and note if one is noticeably hotter than the rest. That would indicate your bad bearing.

Compressors are bad about that because you check them when they run freely. You don't notice when they kick in and that's when it's bad bearing comes in to play or the compressor itself is locked up. Look at the compressor pulley closely for heat discoloration. If you have the means and belt is off, unplug the compressor and run 12V/ground directly to it and energize it. See if you can turn the pulley.

    I put $20 on the compressor. :)

Hmm not sure your belt problem is related---18 is hi coolant temp....could be two separate issues

If the belt jumps the water pump stops turning. Dangerous scenario. I think it has auto shutdown but it's still not good to get one hot. The heat has no where to go if it ain't circulating.

I guess he has it fixed by now. I wish he would come back and tell us. I'm curious to what it was. :)
