i'm looking to get a local job in hauling fuel. What do I have to look forward to or problems to look out for coming from van driving?

You will probably look forward to fighting with the 4-wheelers when you deliver to service stations. Some stations are pretty "tight". But overall, hauling fuel was one of the better jobs that I had in my driving career. Just keep your mind on what you are doing, there are no "erasers" when it comes to hauling fuel

I might add more later, but a couple cons are tiny gas stations that were not designed for trucks and you have to have the ability to get in and out of them without hitting anything or scratching the truck up. Weird people in bad neighborhoods. People think you're a gas station pump attendant. It's not much fun if you open the wrong valve.

    I love doing it myself.

Tankers run long wheel bases too. That will further complicate some already difficult access issues.

As a new hire you'll probably be working nights, weekends and holidays.

It is a good job and it pays well. But if you ever see that real bright light, you will not be coming back and telling people about it! LOL.

I started off driving with a moving company so I've had a lot of fun taking a semi through residential neighborhoods squeezing between cars, blindside 90's, and backing up 100's of feet on curvy roads.

I haven't measured the difference but I pulled up alongside a tanker being pulled by a condo and our tandems lined up. My tandems were all the way forward so I would think driving a day cab with the tanker would give me a smaller truck and trailer then what I'm driving now.

I'm driving nights, weekends and holidays now, the bonus with the new job is I would be able to sleep in my own bed.

That is what I keep hearing, hopefully I can use the tanker experience in the oil industry when that starts back up.

After a month with a truck and trailer I don't think I would ever go back to a semi unit.

Depending how you're paid, you could learn to hate your time at the rack. I would never take a job that paid by the load.
