I should say "Speech to Text." Android has a great speech recognition software built-in, and I use it at home and in my car. It is still a distraction, but more like a phone call than texting. I am curious: is it still illegal? If you spoke your text, how would DOT know? I imagine they would just see a text and the time, and you get a ticket. Does anyone have any insight?

This is gonna sound dumb....but....can DOT just check your phone for random texts and stuff?

Well, I answered my own question. For anyone else who is unsure, DOT is pretty strict: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/topics/distracted-driving/overview.aspx A good rule of thumb: don't touch your phone.

Last I knew, it was illegal to use a cell phone in any capacity in a CMV. So I'm going to guess it probably is illegal. Not that they would know if you did it anyway. Budha, I'm pretty sure they can't do that.
