Texas only Carrier

    Hey folks,
    I got my DOT number for TX only, got an insurance quote that is very favorable from progressive.

    I have a few questions still. How do I get my plates for Texas only? How much are they? The insurance agent told me I don't need an ELD running in Texas... Is that true?

    Anyone out there knowledgeable about DFW/Houston lane round trip. They used to be a lot of loads going back and forth but I just skimmed the DAT board and it seems like it has slowed down a lot.

    Also, in Texas, you can run 12 hours a day and no 30 min break. Is that still true?

    12 hrs driving, 15 hrs on duty, 8 hr break, no 30 minute break, 70 hrs in 7 days. But it can get more complicated. You must be hauling intrastate freight. If you haul interstate freight, that is freight that either began in another state or country, or will end that way, even if you never leave Texas, you are supposed to go to the federal rules. And then you have to stay on them until you get a reset.
    I not saying everyone goes by these rules as I know people that run Tx and stay on Tx rules all of the time.

    I'm OTR dry van out of TX , I flirted with the idea of running Tx only freight. Only problem is the more docks you bump the more time spent sitting. Hard to make alot of money short hauling to Dallas, Houston and Sanantonio. Round trips are key but sometimes difficult to line up .

    @danny23tx OTR is out of the question for me. I need to stay close to home. There seems to be plenty of loads between large texas cities. Not sure what the competition for them is. I am in the research phase. How do you suggest I figure out the competition? If the load pays $600 to $700 each way you should be able to get 1.5 loads a day.

    Also the insurance rate goes way down and you get 12 hours to run in texas with no 30 min break.

    In TX, to get your commercial plates you need to find a Regional Service Center. Click the link below, then look for and click “Find your Regional Service Center.”

    TXDMV.GOV - Dallas Regional Service Center

    I paid about $1900 in 2019. About the ELD, I think the insurance agent is wrong. Perhaps the local drivers under a 100-mile radius are exempt from ELD and maybe even the 30-min break.

    Before you get a Texas only, make sure you have freight that's Inrastate.

    Pulling a container from Laredo to Dallas is very likely Interstate as the shipment crossed state lines. Remember it's the shipment that defines if the load is Intrastate or Interstate, not the driver.

    It can’t be true. An intra-state motor carrier should be legally allowed to pick up a load from anywhere within the state, regardless of where the load originated. Now if you are referring to the company’s trailers going to Mexico, well, I do not know if that’s considered inter-state.
