Posting this for anyone in Texas who has let their medical card expire and got the letter in the mail stating their CDL was downgraded to a class C. As long as you still have your class A and it hasn't expired, all you need to do is fill out 2 pages of paperwork and show a valid medical card to the DMV. It's around $40 and you'll be reissued a new CDL using the same number as your old one. You will NOT have to retake the skills and road tests. I don't know if there's a time frame(how long it's been since your medical card expired) but I went 8 months and had no problems getting my CDL upgraded back. We all know getting the dmv on the phone is nearly impossible and website info can be outdated or nonexistant...so here's the low down on this as of 1/13/17.

This is country wide since last year. I wish all of you would start writing your reps in DC to tell them to get this changed to allow one regulation to suspend the CDL and be able to reinstate it any time in the future without going through the entire CDL process because some states will make it a suspension without allowing a reinstatement in the future.

If that's true, then that's great news for the ones that get screwed by inept DMV personnel that decide not to process self-certifications.Ms. G Thanks this. -
Does anyone disagree with this? My med card never expired. I just didn't sent the self certification form in. No I'm downgraded. Will I have to retest once I show my med card has always and is current?

When I stopped trucking around 2009, I filled out a Tier two form to maintain my CDL A and all under grandfathered rules in my state. No medical card needed. With a set of very limited situations where I might be running a big rig (Such as the USA getting nuked and hauling dead bodies for example...) under Tier two.
If you need a new DOT medical, go get it and show the forms to the Revenuer at the DMV it should not be difficult to restore your class A CDL etc. under tier one. Which is what you want to swear to before being issued a full CDL so you can keep on trucking. -
you are notified months in advance when your med card is due to expire. this is your livelihood. Same as your CDL.
1. dont do illegal crap (speeding is an example)
2. print out your mvr once or twice a year. make sure your CDL is valid.
3. Dont rely on anyone to send or submit any CDL or medical card info in. Do it yourself.ncmickey, Lepton1, Mattflat362 and 1 other person Thank this. -
You can check your CDL status online at TXDPS.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
It's been law of the land for a few years now. And it's up to YOU to make sure those things are done. Don't EVER let ANYONE say they'll do it for you. Too many members crying on here because they trusted someone else to do THEIR job for them. And now their license is downgraded.
