    Hi Everyone,

I had a quick question - I always see different terms/numbers associated with a given load and was wondering if anyone could explain what each one means, when they are used, what they mean, etc. Here is a list of the terms I've seen. Any guidance would help. Thanks in advance!
    • BOL Number
    • Seal Number
    • P.O. Number
    • Load Number
    • Reference Number
    • Order Number

BOL Number - The number assigned to the Bill of Lading for the load by the shipper.
Seal Number - Number on the seal attached to the trailer door. (Some, not all, loads are sealed.)
P.O. Number - Purchase order number. Number assigned to a purchase made on the road. Could be for toll reimbursement, lumper comcheck...
Load Number - Number identifying the load in the carrier's software

The other two.....could be multiple things.

    dominic23 and MapTrotter23 Thank this.

I just assumed (lol) that he meant what the terms were referencing in general. And I answered as such.

BOL number is a unique number to identify the legal shipping papers number of a given shipment generated by the shipper
P.O. Number is the purchase Order Number generated by the buyer of a given product to reconcile with when the product arrives
Load Number varies in the context, typically as was mentioned, the unique shipment number as pertains to a given carrier i.e. every load dispatched to a driver has a Load number (sometimes called a pro number) for reference inside the carrier's business/billing operations.
Reference Number also varies according to context. Can be assigned in the appointment phase to a pending arrival, or it can refer to a host of other things
Order Number is usually the unique number generated by a manufacturer or shipper to assign to the product ordered by a customer

    dominic23 Thanks this.
