anybody ever worked for a temp to hire staffing company for truckers? I had never known there was such a thing just for the trucking industry, but I have found several around here. I was wondering what the positives or negatives might be of working for one as opposed to working for a REAL company (other than the obvious stuff - job could end....they could move you to something else.....a REAL trucking company might be more predictable, etc)
temp. staffing companies

All of the factories around here use temps . That is very interesting, had no idea myself, but most of them unfortunately pay very little with no health insurance offered. If you are lucky, the company might hire you on. I wonder if it is the same, for the trucking ones?

I can add a new twist that many may not know about from my point of view as a carrier.
I am a carrier and employ about 15 drivers. Back when I was a bit smaller, I used to use a temp agency. What I would do is hire the drivers that I wanted, THEN take them down to the temp agency and have the temp agency hire them. The temp agency would then lease my drivers back to me. What this essentially did for me was gave me the ability to outsource all of my HR needs to the temp agency. The temp agency handled driver payroll(including all of the tax withholdings), got me a good discount on workers comp insurance, and could offer a group plan on insurance for the drivers and 401k for the drivers. This essentially eliminated alot of work for me and still allowed me to offer reasonably priced benefits to my drivers. I would just cut one very large check each week to the temp agency and they would pay the drivers and pay for the bennies and taxes accordingly.
For everything that they provide me, they charged me about 5% for their services. So if a drivers gross pay plus cost of benefits per week was $1500 then I would cut a check to the temp agency for $1575 thus paying them $75 a week per driver for their services. Well worth it in my opinion. Now that my company is a bit larger, I have stopped using the temp agency as it has become more cost effective to hire a part time employee that now handles all of these functions in house.
I know this isn't exactly what you were asking about in the post, but I thought you may find it interesting nonetheless. -
I didn't know this either until recently. The positive side of it is. You get to see how the company works and treats there driver before you are a employee for them. You also see if the equipment is maintained. The negative side is. They can use you intermittently for working. You could also have short weeks of less pay. Which is what I just found out. I believe as a driver there is more positives then negatives.

I talked to one a few times. I will say that most the jobs they told me about were advertised locally if you did some looking. Although they didn't necesarilly pay more if you got it directly. I know them people still ring my phone all the #### time 2 years later

I have not worked as a temp, but my employers hired them during the busy season and leased extra tractors for the short term. At one employer, the temps earned a higher wage than full-time employees but had no fringe benefits. One employer would try a driver from the temp agency and offer him full employment if he measured up. The temp is the guy without a company shirt or cap.

I worked as a temp for many years in electronics. I drove a flatbed cdl b as a temp. That job lasted 4 weeks, a larger company bought the one I was driving for & replaced all drivers. Remember you are temporary. There is no warning or employment length. No loyalty for good work! Also, as I am finding now truck companies look down on you if you have a lot of temporary jobs as does every other type company. They decide you MUST have employment problems. They don't understand "it's the economy stupid!" I just hope they get to experience things from my perspective.

We use them at work for night time driving. I was one of three people that really didn't care if I drove days or nights. But the boss had biggers plans for me and let the temp drivers take the trucks for the nights. The bad part is that they do not know half the time if they are driving that night or if the truck is down because we are changing something.
