O.K. Folks when I go and Buy My FIRST Truck.........Just wanted to know ( Don't laugh ).
Is it just Like Buying a Car,as far as Financing ? : Tax/Tag and Title.
NO I'm not going to Pay cash for it.....When I say Title, that's what ever the State charges for Processing the Title.
So is there ANY OTHER Fees ? Besides those ( Oh,and I'm sure The Dealer will charge his ' Dealer Fees ' I'm assuming just like when you buy a Car ).
Also,is there Federal Uniformity to Buying a Class 8 Tractor ?......In other words : Different States CANNOT Tack On thier Own SEPERATE Fees ( for what ever Excuse,or reason ).
To get a Little More $$$$$ Out of The Driver.
Finnaly is there is State,or States, that are More Easier,to Buy Trucks in ?
In Other words.....I Remember Years ago I a Story, that Oklahoma was the easiest State to Buy a Truck in ?
I never asked Why ? I just overheard it at a Truck Stop, when a Couple of Guys were taking next to me. ( Is that Correct ? ).
Keep on Truckin '.

To get the title in California, you have to pay 8% of the purchase price as sales tax. New trucks also have a federal excise tax
-
Federal Road use tax form 2290. Must show payment before tag issued.

They cracked down on Oklahoma registrations. Thank Ohio politicians for that. Check the OOIDA website for the answers to your questions.

Make sure the heavy vehicle use tax and NY HUT taxes have been paid current on the truck you are buying, if not you will end up paying the back taxes on the truck before you can register it. Obviously the NY HUT wouldn't matter if you don't go to NY, but it is good to be sure the prior owner was current on the taxes. I have seen this happen with repos and bankruptcy sales. Other than that, depending on your state motor carriers are sales and use tax exempt. Purchasing a commercial vehicle is very similar to other vehicles, just expect the fees to be higher.
Tags are much higher than cars, and you will need an IRP account if you are going to travel interstate (apportioned plates). Some states you have to visit the local tax office for the IRP plates, some the DMV has an IRP office. If you are leasing to a carrier and using their authority let them help you with the titling and registration, unless the require you to provide your own base plate. I would hate to see you title and register the truck then find out the carrier you are leasing to wants their own base plate, you would end up paying twice and may have a delay waiting for the paperwork to come back so you could change the name on the registration. In most states apportioned plates are not refundable.
For a first time owner operator registering an 80,000 tractor with a 48 state plate expect title and tags to cost about $2200-$2500, plus the form 2290 at $550, sales tax of 5-8% of purchase price depending on state, and any dealer fees. I would expect a $3,000 or more cash outlay but with commercial financing you can usually have this wrapped up into the deal. Lastly, if it is a new truck there is a 12% of the purchase price Federal Excise Tax, that adds up fast. -
In Missouri:
Paid 2290.... $550
Paid insurance....your up front cost depends on if you lease to a carrier or have own authority.
UCR...$76
Just paid my IRP plates for next year $1573. I don't run all states. Just from the Rocky Mountains to east coast except the New England area. This also depends on if your are leased to a carrier. I have my own authority.
No sales tax in Missouri for trucks licensed at 80,000#.
Copy of paid personal property taxes.
If own authority must have updated your MCS150 form.
Since you live in Florida yours will probably be different in some ways.
If you just want to bring the truck home from the dealer you probably will be able to get by with just bobtail insurance and a temporary plate (piece of paper from the dealer to stick in your window). The dealer will give you the title application paperwork to get your title. In Missouri we take that to local license bureau to get the vehicle titled just like a car BUT the PLATES come from the DOT office (Motor Carrier Services). That is who require all the other stuff mentioned.blade and BlackLions Thank this. -
If you just want to buy the truck and get it home you need just plain old insurance called bobtail. If your buying the truck from a dealer some can give you a temporary plate good for 7 to 10 days. If not your home town registry or town can. That's what I did before I did everything else mentioned above.

I'm based out of Florida. I am leased on to a carrier based out of Ill and I have a base plate on my truck from Ill. Yet on my door it says Tupelo Ms because thats where his partner is based and he wants me to run under his authority. My trailer has an Oklahoma permanent tag.
So when people see me, they say Oh your from Ok? Oh your from Tupelo?
Nope, just a good ole boy from Florida trying to get by.

Brian are you familiar with Maryland? Do you need your own operating authority to get apportioned tag and register for IRP in Maryland if you lease your truck on with a carrier and truck is operated under their authority? IFTA is reported by carrier.
