I have tattoos on both arms, all above the elbow and only about an inch is visible outside a shirt. Will this hold me back with certain companies?

Probably not. Some companies don't care at all as long as you can do the work. Both my arms are pretty much covered from the wrist up from my Navy days. I hired on with a company that had a"no tattoo" policy, but I wore a long sleeved shirt to the interview and orientation and was hired. About 3 years later some higher up noticed a tattoo peeping out from my wrist & said if we knew you had those tattoos we wouldn't have hired you, but you're safe now because you one of our best drivers.
Just wear long sleeved shirts during interviews & orientation and don't mention tattoos. -
The tattoos are a part of you. I don't see them holding you back though. Some companies may frown upon them however I don't see it being a problem as long as none of them are inapproriate. That begs the question of what is appropriate now days though and that's hard to say with the way society is and what is accepted now as opposed to years ago. I was asked when I took the job hauling cattle weather I had any tattoos or piercings, I said no and I don't have any, why it would've been a problem I cannot say I would guess it's more of an image deal than anything else...and keep in mind I own my own truck and have my own authority all I do is pull this guy's trailer and he's asking me these questions. You can be a professional and have tattoos and piercings. I know many that are. I don't see this as a problem.

Some will , some won't. Hard to say , but usually as long as they aren't too over-board folks have no problem with them.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
In this day and age of ''profiling'' and ''Discrimination'' and ''Political Corectness'',YES YES YES...
Certain managers will ''judge'' you for this. They may never tell, but it happens everyday...Chinatown Thanks this. -
wow, i wouldn't have thought tatts would even be considered these days! although i guess if you had gang tatts all up your throat or those little tears on your face (i've heard <probably not true> that they indicate how many people you've killed) it might give even the most liberal employer pause. i've got 4 tatts myself. one is around my left wrist and is hard to hide, but at first glance, most people think it's just a watch band or bracelet.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Seriously...I see drivers at the terminal in their PJs and house shoes talking to the higher ups...all the time. Never even considering this might be unprofessional on several different levels. I'm sure you will be fine. Someone is hiring drivers who are pierced, tatted, mohawked and dyed every color under the sun cus I see them, all the time.
SheepDog, blairandgretchen, Chinatown and 1 other person Thank this. -
If you have those visible gang or prison tattoos, when the interviewer ask if you have any questions, don't ask, "Do you have a strong 'blankety-blankety-blank' diversity program in place?"
landstar8891 and kaygirl Thank this. -
I have tattoos on both arms, wear inappropriate and offensive t-shirts, and only shave if I feel like it. No company I have ever worked for has ever said anything about it.
Last St. Patrick's Day I wore a t-shirt that depicted a leprechaun in different states of drunkenness (happy --> happy with a bottle --> stumbling --> vomiting a rainbow into a pot of gold) It just happened to be the day I had to go into the terminal for a review. My fleet manager and his boss thought it was HILARIOUS.Chinatown and landstar8891 Thank this. -
