A "Mid trip inspection". That's the stupidest thing I've heard all month. Inspecting everything on a 75 foot combination vehicle twice a day is absurd hence why literally noone does it except for maybe newbies on their first day out. One good post trip inspection so you can get problems fixed during downtime is better than three half assed inspections a day which is the best you'll get if you're making someone do a full vehicle inspection 3 times a day like a bozo.
But now the bozo paper pushers at your company want them to do a THIRD full vehicle inspection each day. Hey Bozos, if they aren't doing the pre and the post trip inspection they sure as hell aren't going to do a "Mid trip inspection ". Your drivers know your a bunch of bozos without a clue and that's why they're blowing you off. The ones who aren't blowing you off are just filling out your dumb little form to shut you bozos up and not actually inspecting anything.
You want to prevent downtime? Here's how you do it. You pay your drivers to do a full post trip inspection at the minimum and when a problem is found unless it's an emergency you get the tractor fixed during the drivers home time and you get the trailer fixed after the driver is done with it. If you need to repair something and make a driver wait for the repair away from home then you pay him by the hour to wait. As long as drivers get punished with lost pay for reporting problems they aren't going to report them and your going to spend a hell of a lot more on breakdowns than the driver pay needed to prevent them.

umm, can someone define 'mid trip' inspection. Is this done by the driver or by a shop?

the inspections are compulsory , the reporting thereafter is another matter.
nothing personal ,but maybe you need to learn what drivers are required to do and how it's done.
doing a third inspection will make them report what they don't report on the other 2??Dan.S Thanks this. -
Have you talked to the drivers and 'asked' why this seems to be a problem? Stopping at a shop on route can be a quick experience or a long one. Are time pressures a problem? Are they getting compensated for their time? Are they missing out on loads because of it? -
stopping at a truck stop for an inspection can cost a driver 3-4 hrs or more!!!!
you will pay them correct?? and push back the delivery times. -
P.S. To clarify what I mean by Mid Trip Inspection:
A walk around by a 3rd party mechanice, usualy at a truck stop, to check the tires, brakes, lights and ect.
And we ask for the inspection just once a week or less often.Last edited: Mar 2, 2020
