First off I'm not a diesel tech just a driver. So, here's the rundown. I had a 14 t680, 450hp Cummins, 10 speed automatic with the aggressive shift tune, daycab, 170k miles. Over the past 6 months I have averaged 4.3 to 4.7 mpg.

Now I have a 15 t880, 485hp Cummins, 10 speed manual, daycab, 60k miles. For the past week I have made the same runs and cant get any better than 3.8 to 3.9 mpg

I'm not sure if the motor is the same size, but gearing and tire size is the same on both trucks. I'm not getting any codes and truck was completely serviced 4k ago.

    Any ideas? Thanks

Tell us a little bit about your operation, Trailer, weight , region you run in.What rear ends, speed your running and RPM. Also if you have a turbo gauge where is it at when your on a level surface. and is there a fairing on the truck.

Engine is at or near the mileage for its first valve adjustment .. if that wasn’t done it could explain lower mpg ..

Running the southeast, conditions are nearly identical. Same driver, loads, traffic, terrain, empty weights are the same on both trucks about 40k gross is the same 80k. No fairings. The trucks are nearly identical t680 450hp, 10 spd auto, 4.3 to 4.7 mpg and t880 485hp, 10 spd manual, 3.8 to 3.9 mpg.

The valve adjustment maybe what I'm needing. We just bought the truck 2 weeks ago from a rental company probably no way to know unless it's on record with KW.

Here's a pic of the t680 and the trailer. The t880 is identical other than what separates a 680 from a 880 and pulling the same trailer. 20171123_111228.jpg

I think an overhead is a good start, also have charge air cooler checked, could have a leak. With no fairing on top and the trailer your pulling I don't think your going to see much better than mid 5s. Might help to get a good tune done on the ECM if the boss would go for it.

The new truck only has 60k miles. I'm only trying to get up to mid 4's like my previous truck. I do too much city and idling to get to mid 5's.

EGR Tuneup would be my first step. Check the SCR system for cracks and leaks, look up SCR Volcano. Myself, I would run it down to Haggai Automotive and Diesel Repair and let him fix your trucks for good. He is in Griffin GA, just a few miles South of Atlanta. You do know about the fuel pumps on your trucks? I hope you do, because they are a ticking time bomb. Also, the liner issues, they are bad from the factory in many instances.

Bottom line, give Haggai a call, he can at least get your fuel mileage up into the 7's. Owners bring their trucks their from across the country, Cummins is his specialty. He is the number one Cummins rebuilder in GA and #4 in the entire nation. He knows his stuff, and the programming too. Google his FaceBook page. And yes, I have been to his shop, know MANY of his customers and I am in no way connected to him. But, he would be the first place I would take my truck for issues like you are having. Don't waste your time and money at the dealers. Call Kaitlyn and make an appointment, they are booked out to mid June at present. I will be heading over there in the morning. Good luck, and call Kaitlyn.

I appreciate it. I'm at Cummins in Atlanta now getting it checked out its still under warranty. I wouldn't mind taking it down to Griffin and having him work on it, but it's not my call or money. Good to know though may see if I can take it there once the warranty is gone.

No one asked about the gearing in the rears?

    Could these be city trucks?

Gearing is the same. Yes city and back roads. Just need the new truck to have the same or better as the old truck.
