Looking for some perspective on Switchback LED lights. These would be the 3157 version for the Petebilt projector type headlight assembly.

    1) Seems these lights might fall into the grey area of legality.
    2) Anyone have any interactions with DOT while running Switchbacks?
    3) If running Switchbacks does the angled white light make much difference? Perhaps the performance may depend on the manufacturer.

Any other info is greatly appreciated.

Does DOT appear stamped into the lens ?
If not their is their reason to write a ticket.

The lens are OEM.....It's the build that's being replaced.

An LED bulb should never be put into a housing designed for a Halogen bulb. They scatter glare everywhere because of the different physical properties of the light sources.

You are good to go, both legally and technically. I don't know the brand, it looks like they are the commonly branded mid-range Chinese lamps.

for those who don't understand, the projection light unit98s can use LED lights because it focuses the light a lot differently than the reflective light system.

The only thing I ask is please please don't put in lights that are so bright, it blinds people a mile away, AND select a heat range that is not blue but a soft white, it helps a lot to reduce eye fatigue.

Only if the projector is designed for LEDs, and only if the light sources are in the exact same physical location as the OEM bulbs.

Yes, projectors focus the light differently than a reflector, but they are just as sensitive to light source technology and location. The various light sources are bright in differing locations within the actual source beam, which is why switching light source technology in any given lighting system results in poor performance (pattern issues, excessive scatter, glare) even if the extra brightness close to the vehicle fools the eye into thinking there are better results.

    No
Yes to a point. the location isn't the issue, the light pattern with the LED unit is the issue. The LED needs to have a 360º light pattern and with the same beam position as a standard light.
Yes projection lights use a condensing lens, which focuses the light differently.
Yes, it is true but it isn't because of the headlight unit, it is because the LED light source is not aligned right giving dropouts and/or blind spots. This is where the problem is with the LED unit, not the headlight unit itself.

I have yet to see light scatter or glare from a projection unit, pattern issues like a dropout again are the problem with the LED unit itself.

I run LEDs in two of my personal vehicles that came with halogen bulbs. As long as you have the bulb oriented so that it's pointing from left to right instead of up/down the reflector housings work perfectly.

I also replaced all four of my bulbs in my W9 with LEDs and they made a world of difference. I have them properly aligned except for my high beam bulbs. I have them set higher than spec to intentionally be in the face of drivers that use light bars on their vehicles.

One thing I've noticed is that after switching to LEDs other cars headlights don't bother me anymore. Before the switch it seemed like other LED or HID equipped cars were bothering me. Now they don't affect me at all. That was a very unexpected bonus of making the switch.
