I'm supposed to being going to orientation on March 15 at the Gary, IN terminal. I was wondering if Gary, IN is considered a decent terminal or not. I will be there all week due to going flatbed and needing the tarp and securement class. I'm still waiting for Swift to finish up my background which I'm guessing should come back okay. Also in my orientation letter they sent me it said I had to buy steel toed boots at the Swift store because of going flatbed but I already have like three sets of steel toed boots and plan of bring one set with me. Does anyone know if I'll still have to buy another pair?

I can't answer all your questions, but I can tell you I avoid Gary whenever possible. I much prefer to go to the Manteno, IL terminal when I'm in that area. Gary's just a dump. The terminal and the city.

Gary is about the worst terminal Swift has.

Yeah gary terminal is a dump, they pack so many trailers in that place that theres no where to park and sometimes you cant even drive through the lot. The staff there are ok I guess had to do a couple classes there just one hour class test type thing so I didnt interact with them to long. But the facilities in the drivers area are just plain nasty the showers suck the bathrooms suck. But you go upstairs where the office people are and the building is somehow upkept and cleaned and actually decent. Have fun there just keep an open mind and you'll do fine, an once you get on the road you'll see why the majority of the drivers try to avoid the gary terminal. I agree the manteno terminal is way better but I hardly ever got there. The best terminal as far as clean and upkept was the inver grove terminal in minnesota.

Thanks everybody. So once I get my own truck can I change home terminals or does it really even matter?
-
Agreed, Gary is about the worst terminal... although Decatur Ga runs a close second in my book. As for the boots, no big deal there, any steel toe ones will work.
The only time home terminal is basically mandated is with you skateboarders. Only Gary IN and Greer SC handles ya'll. Have heard rumors about Greer moving away from flatbeds tho (pretty sure that is just a rumor tho - been hearing it for about six months and nothing yet). If you can run out of Greer you would be way better off. While Greer is not the cleanest place, and the yard is generally trashed by those non parking Swifty wheelholders ughhh .... the staff there is among the best I have ran acorss. When I was OTR that was the terminal I ran out of even though I live much closer to the Decatur terminal.
Hope that helps, good luck either way. And remember IF you have to park your truck at Gary for ANY length of time, carry anything that is valuable with you and don't leave it in the truck. Same holds true for Memphis. Just my opinions of course -

Gary, IN is one of the worst terminals, well that was until they redone Martinsburg, WV and Richmond, Va terminals. Now they where dumps Martinsburg and a dirt lot and holes in it that a straight truck could get lost in. Oh and if more then 15 trucks was there it was full. but now its 100,000,000,000 times better same with Richmond it was just paved but small as hell but now its about 8 times the size it was before.
