Super 40's are basically a stronger housing then a regular 40. It was always explained to me as a 46 housing with 40 inners although its not literally.

Used to be super 40's were regular drop in diffs in thicker housings. Newer trucks "super 40's" are 46k rears with "3/8 thick housings insted of "1/2. full set of tandems saves about 50 pounds. If you spec a new truck they will let you use 40k suspensions with "super 40's. TYPICALLY if you get 46's they make you get a 44k or heavier suspension and scrutitize lighter frames etc.

The Super 40 Eaton rears are designed for high Hp and torque engines. The ring gear diameter is much larger than a standard 40K rear. The reason they were built was to accommodate the extra HP and torque of the C-16 engine. Initially when the C-16 engine was built you had to order the truck with 46K Lb tandems for any application. To reduce the weight penalty of doing this Eaton decided to use the 46K Lb center section in a lighter axle housing with smaller axles diameters. This reduced the weight of the tandem by 225 lbs versus a truck with a full 46K Lb tandem. Unfortunately this didn't meet the requirements of the truck builder goal of reducing weight for Interstate trucking operations equipped with the C-16 engines. Eaton warrantied this rear at this Hp and torque level with no restrictions to the type of work load the truck would preform

The next reduction in weight came with what is known as the High Performance 40 tandem rears. These are strictly limited to trucks that are used in Interstate highway use, with more than a 30 miles between starts and stops, otherwise Eaton would deny a warranty repair on them. To build this rear Eaton uses a 44K Lb center section with 40K Lb axle housing. The ring gear size was slightly larger than a standard 40K Lb rear, but the weight saving over the complete 46K Lb rear was roughly 425 Lbs if my memory is correct. When this rear became available 99% of all C-16 trucks were built with it afterwards.

The thing I do like about the Super 40 is it runs much cooler for the same work load than a standard 40K Lb rear, because the bearings are so much larger. The earlier versions of it are prone to have issues with input shaft bearing failures and driveline vibration if the pinion angles aren't perfect.....so never play with the ride height of the truck
