I have a set of 40,000 lb Rockwell rears

I don't have any of the studs and lugs to attach the wheels. I am only looking to attach the inner wheel.

What is the proper term for that part? Are there different sizes?

Thimbles. As far as I know there is only one size.

I am not sure what you are saying. The hub pilot studs use the same nut to attach one wheel or two.
Does your hubs have studs in them?
If they are bud studs, you will need bud inner nuts, and the right ones, they are different for steel and aluminum.

Stud mounted "Budd" wheels are 3/4"-16 inside and 1-1/8"-16 outer. Barrell nuts hold the inner wheel on. Regular nut on the outer. RH side are RH thread and LH side are LH thread as stamped on the fasteners. As @starmac says, if you are running aluminum wheels you will need to get the longer barrel nuts with the stepped shoulder.

Do not forget Budds have LH studs on the left and RH studs on the right. When we put single floaters on the rear drives we use nuts for the steer axle.

Are you saying you use 3/4-16 budd nuts to put single wheels on the drive inner studs without the barrel nut? Sounds like it would work if I read you right. Any issues with loosening? Most steer axles are the larger 1-1/16 tapered nuts.

To use a regular steer axle nut, you would have to use an inner nut first. I have some nuts that work, not sure what I have them for or when I even got them.

Hmmm...... guess I was thinking if the inner nut went on without a wheel there would be a gap. Retired my pork chop years ago.....lol.

Had some earlier 90's Heil blow cans that ran Super singles (425/65R 22.5 on 12.25 wheels) with stud pilot hubs. The nut was a one piece 3/4" with a very deep shoulder sleeve to center them up. Drivers always complained about not having any stud standout. Finally put longer studs on them to appease them.

Seems like stud piloted wheels were always extremely over tightened with 1" impact. Seems like we always had broken inner studs during wheelend maintenance as a kid.
