Stuck in a dock...

    I agree, most cities and counties have laws and ordnances which make it their responsibility to keep things clean.

    had a truck stuck at a dock at a retailer a couple years back. When my driver told the manager of the store about being stuck, he said "your problem". He called me, I called my lawyer who called the store manage and read to him the ordinance of the city the store was in which said they have to maintain all entrances and exits free of snow and ice and offered two options to the manager, one was to pay for getting the truck out of their directly or having it sit there until we get around to calling for a tow which means no one gets in or out of his dock for at least a day. After the four hours, he had five trucks waiting to get into the dock and he agreed to pay the bill. so I had the truck towed, and right after my truck got out, the manager was smart and had a crew clean up all the snow and ice. I sent him a bill with the tow charges, the lawyer's fee and driver's wages at his normal hourly rate - it wasn't cheap. About 45 days went by and we got a check for the bill, no issues or headaches.

    Why isn't this type of thing docked?

    For you all knowing so much about it, there wasn't much to find. (I admit I didn't look hard, but on my phone the results get to be overwhelming.)

    They reduced the number of docked threads awhile back. There were so many docked threads in some of the forums that it ate up a good chunk of the page.

    I am going to give you a bit of advice. When you have some free time take a tape measure and measure through one of the holes in your truck rims and out over the top of your tire, it is probably 3-4'. If you are running super singles they might be a bit longer. Then go to the hardware store and buy 4 pieces of 5/16" chain that length and four grab hooks. The next time you are stuck feed a piece of the chain through the hole OPPISITE of the one your tire valve stem is in and hook it back upon itself. Put one on each wheel and you will be able to drive out of that little mess that you are in. They work great for icy conditions in loading docks or parking lots where you only need them on for 5 minutes, they don't take up a lot of room and they are quicker to put on then regular tire chains.

    I had that happen to me the other day at a Kroger, docks are on a downgrade and they barely plowed it. It was a one way trip. Being a former tow driver I can talk out my ##### with the best of them. After about 30 minutes I was holding up other trucks that needed the dock. I told the store manager that they failed to do their job and keep the dock safe and my compnay was going to start charging them downtime, After that me and him went to the seasonal isle, took about 15 40lbs bags of rock salt and put it everywhere. After about 20 more minutes I was on my way. Between the melting that already happened and the traction from the salt itself I got out just barely.

    i see... That gives me an idea, what if one topic was stickies that linked out to the other topics?

    Ha! Yeah, I had a similar idea while stuck. Except I didn't even have that, and SNI pays for chains of their own. So they probably wouldn't reimburse me for that. If I was an O/O I'd be all over that though.

    ...I get creative when in a bind. I didn't have enough large ones to go all the way around.

    rubbing alcohol works....we were at the flying J in Des Moines one time and watched all these drivers keep trying to leave , uphill driveway leaving for those of you who havent been....rubbing alcohol got us unstuck and up out of the t/s.....everyone else had slid back down the driveway.....

    I am going to give you a second piece of advice. Don't worry if your company reimburses you the cost. This is the same company who spent x amount of dollars on tire chains, but didn't have any to give you. I am telling you to spend the $50 to get these made and keep them with you. You can deduct the cost off your taxes and you will never wear them out. You can take them from truck to truck for as long as you are a driver. I used mine three times this year alone and I have had them since 2008.

    I may do that all the same, I wasn't vetoing the idea, but if I can get chains from SNI then I will. If I cant, I'm going to spend 50$ so this doesn't happen again I hope.

    Even though I'm not otr and that was my last assignment for the week, I could've been home Friday before the second wave hit. But if I was otr, the time spent in the docks trying to get out of there would've paid for the chains. (~200 miles * 33cpm = $66)
