Been driving about three weeks now. This week I was "shadowing" a experienced driver. A trainer but in a different truck. Today I was strapping down beams and he said I make my straps too tight. And not to winch them down as tight as I did the poles yesterday. I said ok "how tight?" he said pretty tight but not that tight. WTF? I just said ok. I guess I confused. Sooooo hear is the question. How tight is tight enough? If you could explain or give example would be great. I get there are some things you have to be careful with Like sheetrock. But Im paranoid about stuff sliding or shifting. So I tighten as much as I can.
    Thanks.

with steel or lumber I get them as tight as I can, then try to get them one more notch, if its not going to break when you get it tight then go as tight as you feel, the only time I had a problem was when I got a strap to tight and it broke on me, but other than that your the one driving the truck, not him, if you want the straps tight then do it that way. I like them so when I hit them they make a guitar type sound if that makes any sense....? just do you and what ever you makes you feel safer.

The straps aren't too tight. The freight is too soft.

If your strap is 5400 lbs and you apply 3000lbs of torque tightening the strap your WLL is now 2400lbs.

Lol, that would take one big fella, or a heck of a long cheater bar to apply that much torque to a strap.

Using exaggerated numbers to make my point easier to understand.
Let me rephrase. 5400lb strap on a 5000lb load. 500lbs of torque and you are under secured.

The WLL has NOTHING to do with torque.

No you're not, because to over simplify the regulations on a 5000lb load you only need 2500lb of securement. One - 2" ratchet strap would be legal (maybe not adequate, but legal) securement.
