The old Cat seems like I have a thermostat not opening properly. Anybody know any cheapo "fix" to get me back home? A different reason it gets real hot real quick and doesn't cool off? Heat works like a torch so I don't figure the water pump is spinning on the bolt the way they like to occasionally.

I thank you could just through the thermostat away and get home with those if that is the problem.
Put a pressure gauge in the side of the block. Should have around 30 PSI steady at high speed. If not the pump is bad.

I don't really have the proper tools and gasket or silicone to be tearing into it in a parking lot somewhere is the issue. I know there's a guy about 100 miles up the road could most likely change it, not sure I can get there though.

    Haven’t had problem in years
Was thinking if mechanical could just bypass....Just 2x my 5ek and the clearance isn’t there and hose ports are different
If you can get to it(?) but have to leave it in place....only other thing I can think of...is try and cut 3 top pieces and see if you can pull middle out?

It’s possible but it involves driving for 15 minutes at a time driving like you got egg shells under the pedals and turning the vehicle off for 20-30 minutes. You could get away with driving for longer but 15 minutes is where I’m pretty sure the engines still cold. Personally I’d rather just pay the tow than constantly risking your and other people’s lives constantly pulling over on the shoulder.

What makes you think the thermostat is causing your overheating? In most cases thermostats will fail open or open early. Not fail to open at all.

An infrared temp gun at the appropriate place should confirm this.

Cheapest and easiest place to start. That and it's erratically overheating. Got hotter than a firework Monday afternoon, was fine for a couple days down in 80 degree heat and then got hot as #### again last night and this morning. Assuming the usual sunk liner or cracked head would not be that hit and miss.
