We have a couple of 379s with door latches that won't latch shut, and you have to push up the latch mechanism (there are two of these on the top of the mechanism, and I have to pust up the inner one) to get the door to latch shut.
Is this just a lubrication problem? We have 3 doors doing this, and I am guessing there has been no lubrication of the mechanisms since these used trucks were bought. They are '05 and '06s.
Or is there an spring that is broke that should be pulling the lever up so the door can be latched shut?
Thanks for any help.

Pull off the upholstry, then the inner panel everythings right there. Probably just needs some lube. It does help to have some of those nylon upholstry tools to pop that panel. Got mine from Matco.

Yeah, I was thinking it is a lube problem....since I have not seen any other responses to this post, I am thinking I am the only one with this problem.... thx. -
Some guys don't care. I worked at a big Co.(local job) some years ago. We had write-up slips for repairs. The night mechanics could not go home until all repairs were made. The lazy, uncaring, deadbeats wouldn't take the time to fill out the repair slip. I see some fine eqp. going to crap because of lack of interest. A little TLC,spray white lithium grease and plain old oil goes a long way.

Pumpkin Oval Head Thanks this.

My 05 does the same thing on the passenger side. I've tried several kinds of lube but nothing works - so far.

My '07 379 has the same issues. I have to push up on the top part of the latch to get it to close. Latches fine when I do that. It started occasionally then now the driver's door does it every door opening. I have always kept lube in the jams and latches but I don't think lubrication is the issue here. I believe when I strip off the upholstery and get in to it, I will find a spring defective or stretched beyond it's normal useful length, etc.

The only spring on the jaws are the ones that you can see when you look at the jaw. One for the upper, one for the lower. Spray the spring with penetrating oil then close them with your hand, use the door handle to unlatch them. Keep doing this until they loosen up and they will loosen up. Once they are freed up use motor oil that way it will flow around in there. It will make a little mess but it will quit after a day or so.
The Truckist Thanks this. -
Thanks, Admiral. I'll continue to grease it up. I have tried a couple diff penetrating spray lubes...PB Blaster and some really good stuff called Cen-E-Pac (or something like that). I've worked the latches after lubing using the handle but maybe I haven't done it enough.

I'm saying you might have to open and close those jaws 24-50 times but it should do it. The only ones i've had to replace had close to a million miles on them. Couple suggestions i do. Squirt motor oil on the top of your door hinge and let it run down, good sized mess, but worth it also i spray white lithium gease in the door locks,it lubes them plus it won't freeze. As far as the drivers door i use my key and the manual lock on a pretty regular basis just to keep them working. Years ago i had one seeze up,not fun. Put the window up and down, use the inside door handle all that stuff.
