Hello everyone. I’m an experienced logistics van BCO at Landstar making the switch to step deck. I’m purchasing a 51’ Fontaine step deck, 10’ top, 41’ bottom with container locks and a sliding rear axle. I haven’t bought my securement gear yet so I wanted to post my wish list and see what you experienced guys think. I’m hoping to focus mostly on wheeled/track vehicles but I’d like to be versatile enough to keep rolling consistently.
All chain will be G70 3/8”
(4) 20’ chain with grab hook both ends
(12) 10’ chain with grab hook both ends
(12) 5’ chain with grab hook on one end and slip hook on the other
(4) Each spare grab hooks and slip hooks for switching chain configuration
(6) Approved double clevis midlinks for making longer chains if needed
(16) Peerless Quickbinders
(20) 4”x30’ straps with flat hook
(5) 4”x40’ straps with chain end
(5) 4”x30’ ratchet straps with chain ends
(10) 2”x30’ ratchet straps with chain ends
(6) Portawinch
(4) Heavy duty coil racks
(6) 4x4 beveled edge oak dunnage
That’s the main stuff I was wondering about. Bungees, edge protection, padding, etc. will of course be part of the setup but I didn’t see the need to list all that miscellaneous gear. I’m hoping to not tarp very often, but if you have suggestions on a versatile tarp setup please feel free to share. Thanks

You need more dunnage, that is not enough. The rest is fine, a little overkill, the straps with chains I never really had a use for. The dunnage though, I think I carried at least a dozen 4x4's, but I had a conestoga and was doing some speciality stuff like robotics and control panels, lots of stuff on a load that needed to be off the deck. Same with the quick bindrers, I am assuming ratchet straps, rarely if ever used those either, only had a few I bought for one goof ball load.

You won't be able to haul any freight if you carry that much gear.
Me, personally, long chains are 5/16". I carry some 20' and 12'. I have two 10' that I'll be replacing with 12'. I have a couple 12' 3/8" and four 8' 3/8". It works for me, I've found I can do almost anything with those.
10 snap binders and 4 ratchets
I run all chain end straps. I don't carry dunnage. I've been using moving blankets for tarp padding with good successstwik, SixShooterTransport and SAR Thank this. -

He'd need two big tool boxes on the trailer and huge chain rack for that much iron. I'm tired just thinking of putting it all away
Strap winder and corner protector placer would be good though.hagarcobra, kylefitzy, SAR and 1 other person Thank this. -
I never got that lucky with shipper supplying anything, but like I stated, I was doing odd ball stuff, mainly from manufacturers of specialty equipment. If you said dunnage they would get a glazed deer in the headlights look.

A basic steel hauler loadout seems to cover 99% of flatbed freight.
10-12 3/8 chains (12' lengths)
Matching binders (ratchets are generally preferred at many shippers, snaps work better on some equipment loads)
A whole passel of straps in both 2 and 4 inch. A winch rack on the trailer. Preferably on both sides, and a bunch of winches. I like at least 10 per side (extras are good, just in case) and a total of four between the spreads (two per side)
Also have a few strap ratchets for the 4 inch straps, and definitely make sure every 2 inch strap has a ratchet.
Minimum of 12 8' beveled 4x4, hard wood only!
10-12 coil racks, used conveyor belt rubber strips, felt pads, moving blankets, hammers, a wrecker bar, a winch bar, tarps.
Make sure you have a good Merrit box on the back of your tractor to hold everything.Gunner75, stwik and SixShooterTransport Thank this. -
Wow.....i sold my 3 axle Talbert RGN in april, and got my 53 step. I use 4 3/8in 16 footers, 4 3/8in 20 footers. 8 ratchet binders, 4 snap binders. 12 of the 30ft 4in straps. 8 of the 3in. 4 of the 4in ratchet binders for the straps, with 10 winches down each side. I have a 16x16, a 16x24, and a 20x24 tarp. 6 4x4's complete the package. Screw the coil racks.

I would go with 15 10' chains and 4 20' chains. I wouldn't bother with the clevis to connect chains. If you need to connect them put a binder between them. You didn't mention d rings. I would get those. There are some equipment with small chain holes and I'm not a fan of slip hooks.
Since your getting a step and not an rgn the chain straps aren't super necessary unless your going to be pulling small tractors with hook slots and want to use chain straps for that. I'm not a fan of that because directional pull doesn't work as well with a strap. I mean other than just straight down.
If you do get chain straps ensure the hook, chain and triangle are graded. If they are when you cut a strap you can remove the 3' chain section and use that. Great for dozers or other edge to edge equipment.
If you plan on pulling equipment you don't need coil racks.
On top of the portawinches get a few portaanchors.
Pick up a few snap binders. They work well when a container is 4" off your step. They work well for lifts too.
Get a good pair of water resistant gloves. Don't use them to fuel. Get a good quality safety vest and safety jacket. Good steel toe boots. Hard hat.hagarcobra and SixShooterTransport Thank this. -
Man you guys carry a lot of stuff, usually I hook to chains together with the hooks that are on the chain.
SAR, snowman_w900 and kylefitzy Thank this.
