Looking for some help if anyone can provide it. I'm supposed to pick up a step-deck load that's being loaded out of the port of Long Beach on Friday (3/01). I'm deadheading there after a final stop on a previous load in Santa Rosa, California, which is an 8 hour drive or more depending on Oakland and Los Angeles traffic. I'll probably be close to out of hours when I get to Long Beach. As if this isn't bad enough, this is an oversized load and I've never pulled anything out of a port. Never been in a port. Never even been close to a port. Nobody I work with is any help whatsoever. Couldn't find much on port operations here so thought I'd ask you experts directly. Pier F is the only directions my "dispatcher" was able to give me.
Thanks in advance.
BTW, I don't work for a Russian outfit. Not 10-99. No white Volvo's here. Good company, just bad luck getting stuck in California.

Your truck will need to be registered with CARB and you will need to get a day pass to get in to load. You won’t need EModal RFID as it is not a containerized terminal. Oh and a TWIC card. You are going to need city and county permits in addition to your state permit. I would recommend using WCS permits to help
You get the permits. -
If I were you I would google escorts for the Long Beach port. Call them and try to get on their waiting list. Even if you have a Twic it might be worth it to pay them to escort you so that way you have someone helping you along the way because the union port workers aren’t going to help you.
If you’re getting equipment you’ll have to load it your self and it’s nice to have an extra set up eyes especially your first time.
>>>Bring cash.<<<
I always need to bring a BOL with me when I pick up equipment, see if your work has a BOL for you.
Do you have oversized banners? Red flags? Tape measure? Height stick?ACO476, BigCam9670, REO6205 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Can you move your loading date until the next day? Santa Rosa to Long Beach in 8 hours is asking a lot.
Also, dealing with the Port People can be aggravating sometimes even if you've been there before.
It might go smoother if you gave yourself some extra time. -
I'm fully equipped for oversize loads, I just don't like to pull them. I also have a TWIC card. I have no idea if this truck is registered with CARB. I'll work on getting the BOL and I'm told this load has to pick up on Friday. The problem I have is that everyone I talk to at my company thinks I'll be in and out of there in a matter of minutes. I don't know how to get them to understand the complexities of this other than getting there and being turned away by staff at the port. It's a small 6 truck fleet. One owner drives (for like 23 years) but I'm not sure he's ever done anything in any ports and the other has never driven.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I guess I'll just do my best and hope for an okay outcome. Will the LB Port let you take a 10 there or am I looking at parking on some side street for that? -
If you google earth thenpier you will see some room along the fence line. It is posted no parking but I have overnighted there and I take up a lot more room than you will. The pier is not a 24/7 7 day operation- think regular business hours.
Again - you need a day pass to get in and legally you need a city and county permit to get out in addition to your state permit. There are local cops that enforce - whether you meet one or not I can’t say.ACO476 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Santa Rosa to Long Beach in 8 hours? On a Friday? During the daytime?
I'm really curious how this works out. Best of luck to the OP, the closest parking I know of would be in La Mirada & I don't know how that would work with an oversize.REO6205 Thanks this. -
Welll it’s Saturday. What happened?
-
Well, I made it to the port, registered my truck with CARB, applied and paid for my day pass, waited in line to get in and muscled my way through paperwork issues. After all of that, the load was taken away from me because it required an RGN trailer per the customer. Wouldn't work with a step-deck. Not sure why nobody caught that important little detail until the very last second. Now I'm sitting at the TA in Ontario until Monday because they couldn't find me anything on Friday and I'll have to wait for a load on Monday.
I'm really starting to hate this industry...misterG, baha and PoleCrusher Thank this. -
Hope you got something for your troubles.
If the load posting did not specify RGN, then it should pay a TONU fee.
