Hello I'm looking to find out how much steering shaft/u joint play is acceptable and what warrants replacement. Also is it only up and down play or side to side how about the shaft part that goes into the column?

    Thanks

Here's a screenshot from the Alberta CVIP manual.
Looks like 1mm rotational between splines and 6mm side to side/up down.

How can I measure 6mm? Other than eyeballing it

Dial indicator with a magnetic mount.
6mm is pretty close to 1/4"...
If it's too close to call change it..

While your checking steering wheel shaft. Check the pitman arm nut is tight on the steering sector.
There should be no play on that nut.
