So I can into work one day, second shift left me with a totally flat tire off the rim. So the company has the tire guy come out. He puts on a steer tire in a drive position. Never see that before and was wondering why he did that. Thanks.

Was it the company that put the tire on, or road service?

Either way, they probably had no recaps available, and decided to put the more expensive non recap tires on to get you going. Or if it was road service, they just wanted to charge you more. You can put nonrecaps on the drive, but you can't put recaps on the steering.

Road service. This company doesn't do recaps. Goodyear's for the whole fleet. Looks retarded having a steer on the back though.

My company does this a lot. Their reason is they want you to bring the truck or trailer with the new steer on it to a company shop where they'll put the correct used tire on. Then they pair it with another similar steer and put the pair on the next truck that needs a new set of steers.

    roadmap65 and Dominick253 Thank this.

Tread depth might have been closer to the rest of the axle than anything they had in runout. You don't want a 90% tire next to a 50% tire, because the taller tire ends up carrying the brunt of the load, and wears out much quicker.

You can put recaps on the steering, just not very practical or smart. Can't put em' on a bus steering axle though

Actually I believe i read just recently that you aren't allowed to put recaps on truck steering axles either once you pass a certain weight threshold. Can't remember what it is but basically all class 8 truck tractors.

are you shure about that?I once had to put a worn out spare tire next to a nearly new one and it was the worn tire that wore out VERY fast.In fact it went so quick that after 150 miles no thread was left.
If i remember correctly, the wear was worst when i was empty.

I thought you could use a recap for a steer tire, but not on a bus.
