I started running the Oakland / SF ports in 1985.. I know its nothing like it was then.. but unless you're paid by the hour, its probably going to suck. The wait times THEN were bad most of the time.. the wait times now after all the security was stepped up has to be worse.. Do you have a TWIC card?

Thanks for the responses- @Chinatown I attended a 6 week CDL program in Sacramento who trains a lot of city workers. Thanks for the mentions will look into them. What do you think of pneumatic vs end dumps around here? Do you have any End dump companies you can recommend ? @FozzyNOK I filed for my TWIC card and should be getting it in the next few days. @Air Cooled Yes, It will be container transporting from Oak- 50 miles radius. The owner of the port gig company says wait time are down to less then an hour and I will be paid per load and most of his guys clear $1400 a week. (running 10 trucks)
. I talked to the guys at Royal Trucking in Concord and they said they would hire me If I had a month of local experience. I know this is not what you guys want to hear here but I was self-employed and did pretty well and have the funds to purchase my own truck but I would rather get the hang of things first. -
I did pneumatics for a while, never liked it.. it wasn't as bad a dislike as end dumps.. but for me it was way too noisy, dirty and of course it didn't pay anything..

Well, I suppose give it a try for a little while. Container haulers in the Bay Area are notorious for running hard a reckless. The equipment is poorly maintained as well. I could tell you horror stories from what I’ve seen around the ports. @moloko I’m sure could chime in on that as well. $1400 a week? They are going to expect you to run HARD for that.
Royal has a lot of work with pneumatics and bottom dumps. They work with Cemex. However, I’ve seen and heard that they are slowing down. Conti out of Stockton would be a great company to work towards. The pay is decent and they run good pneumatic tanks from Texas. What’s your location? Sacramento area? There is a lot of work from there. Sac, Lodi, Stockton...
