Hello! My name is Derek. I’m 23 and have had my CDL for about 5 years now and last 2 years have had my A class. been working for this small trucking company doing local runs for 7 months now and am planning on starting my own company soon within the next couple years. Just looking for some advice on how to start the right way. My plan was to get my own authority so get all the permits I need, setup a business bank account, get insurance. For equipment I am planning to lease a sleeper tractor from Ryder right away along with the maintenance deal as well. Also leasing/finance a trailer so that I eventually only lease the trucks and own the trailers. I’m just looking to see if anyone has any experience leasing from Ryder, what to expect, and if it’s possible to lease from a different company like Ryder under my own authority without leasing onto them as owner operator. Is this a good idea and should I lease one truck from the start and try to hire owner operators? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but right now prices are at an all time high for everything, trucks, trailers and fuel. if you could find a trailer to rent most companies wont rent to new authorities so that means buying. you can still find trailers to buy but they will easily be double what they were 6 mos ago. the same may be true for the tractor. the first step is getting an insurance quote. at your age and new authority the price alone may scare u to death. a lot of times the price alone of that causes most people to rethink what direction to go.

Thanks for the feedback. In the end is it better to just become an owner operated under someone else and slowly increase the amount of trucks and hire drivers to drive those trucks under my LLC

Leasing from Ryder or Penske, you will need to have established business.

also not to forget you need operating funds, a few months worth.

In the near end it may be better to be a company driver.

How so? No one gets into the trucking industry to be a company driver their whole life. People have visions to own their own truck one day and be their own boss.
