    Hi everyone,
My wife and I are considering starting a small trucking operation in Nebraska and need advice. We have a CDL driver ready to work for us, but we still need to purchase a truck. I work full-time to support our family, and my wife, a stay-at-home mom, plans to handle dispatching. Our goal is to make a profit of $2,000–$4,000 per month. We’re looking for guidance on whether this is realistic in today’s market, recommendations for buying a truck (new vs. used, specific models), and advice on managing insurance, maintenance, and other costs. Since I plan to keep my day job, tips on managing the business side efficiently would also be helpful. We appreciate any insights or advice you can share!

Unless you already have years of experience in driving a truck and knowing the ins and outs of the business, the best advice I can give you is don’t do it.

If the driver you have in mind has this experience and just needs you to provide the money then maybe you have a chance.

Frankly keep your job, forget about the CDL driver and have you wife get a job if you need money. Going into trucking is NOT going to get what you're thinking.

How much research have you done? Do you have any knowledge of the trucking industry? Are you planning to get your own DOT authority or lease to another carrier? You need to tell us what you have done so far so we can give you direct answers and not generalizations.

Trying to pay a drivers salary off a load board is going to be next to impossible. Better off to drive the truck yourself.
If you have that much money sitting around, just throw it in VOO and reap the benefits.

I’d want go under my dad’s authority. He lives in GA though and I’m not sure if it would be feasible since I am in Nebraska. I do have a little knowledge of the trucking industry. I’ve been a dispatcher before but realized it was extremely saturated and hard to get carriers with so much competition. I know my way around the load boards pretty well too. The only reason I haven’t gotten a truck yet because for one, I want to know if the investment would actually yield a return since the industry has experienced a lot of competition with a large influx of people and two I don’t know enough about the current market in Nebraska. I don’t want to go in blind without knowing what I am getting myself into. The idea sounds good in theory but may not be what the reality is.
